Tascam US-122L Audio/MIDI Interface Review

Tascam US-122L Audio/MIDI Interface
Average Reviews:

I bought this Tascam about a year ago and I am very happy with so far. I am using a laptop running Windows XP and haven't had any problems with the device. I find the handling with the Tascam rather easy and think that for this price it is a perfect audio interface for beginners. (And even though it's a little embarrassing to me to mention how "badly" I treat my equipment sometimes, I have to say that I dropped the interface several times and it's still working fine! ;-)). I have connected my electric guitar with it, my keyboard (via both, 1/8 and midi) and I tried different microphones with the Tascam and each of them were picked up just fine.
I really didn't have problems with it and would recommend it as a "beginner's device".

ART Z Direct Professional Passive Direct Box Review

ART Z Direct Professional Passive Direct Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have not had the chance to test it yet but the physiscal condition is great, brand new with no visible defects at all. Well packaged and all buttons when pressed feels solid and well made. Will review when I finally use it.

Click Here to see more reviews about: ART Z Direct Professional Passive Direct Box

The ART Zdirect is a high quality totally passive interface that lets you connect instrument, line, or speaker level signals to a mixer or other balanced input thru a high performance audio isolation transformer. The high impedance single-ended 1/4' input is converted by the transformer into an isolated balanced low impedance signal source. The Zdirects audio transformer has an extremely flat and wide frequency response and can handle high signal levels while still maintaining an isolated balanced low impedance output. This gives the Zdirect a very clean and neutral sound with a wide variety of signal sources and over long signal runs in high noise environments. The Input Attenuator switches allow for a wide range of signal levels and the Input Thru jack allows for tapping off of your signal chain. The Ground Lift switch lets you totally separate the input and output signal grounds, when appropriate, to isolate two systems, thereby reducing hum and ground-loop noise. What further sets the Zdirect apart from other "DI" boxes are its extended features and versatility. ART has added a switchable low pass Filter that cuts out all very high frequency interference. This Bessel filter on the output is placed out of the audio range and is primarily intended to reduce radio frequency interference before it gets into the main system. The filter is also very effective in reducing any digital computer noise artifacts when using the Zdirect as an interface between a computer based audio workstation and your monitors. The Phase Invert switch, while not normally included with your run of the mill D.I. box, has been added to allow you to switch signal polarity right at the source. This feature is especially handy when you are combining a direct tap with a microphone feed in the mix. The compact black anodized all aluminum case and it's passive design allow the Zdirect to provide years of trouble free service in Live Sound, Permanent/Fixed Install

Phonic Portable FireWire Unit FIREFLY-302 Review

Phonic Portable FireWire Unit FIREFLY-302
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Is this thing plugged in? I mean, it must be, because all my audio software works perfectly, but there aren't any little pictures or spinning things or eye candy to let me know I've got something hooked up. I guess Phonic are too busy making things that just work right to throw a few dozen latency-bloating apps into my system tray, but couldn't I at least get a useless mixer? Or a control panel whose only purpose is to play noise sequentially through each channel? Or just some light-blue windows like Creative are so fond of tossing around? Oh well, I guess this will have to do.
It works seamlessly with Live and Reason, and even my Windows games patch through the Firefly rather than the on-board once it's plugged in. My only complaint is the absence of a 1/4" mic-in for my unamplified electric guitar, which shouldn't be an issue if I use a 1/4"-to-XLR adapter or just amp the signal going into the line-in port.

Rode Podcaster USB Dynamic Microphone Review

Rode Podcaster USB Dynamic Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For recording my voice (baritone), it does a great job. For extra warmth that means close-miking, which in turn means not popping your p's, etc. If you hold it close to your mouth but don't directly face it end-on, that's easily done (or get a pop filter). [...].
The microphone electronics are extremely quiet - the audio is sampled at 18 bits.
It comes with a warranty which is easily extended to 10 years for free.
The real-time headphone monitoring is a great idea and works well.
It's a bit heavy (part of being built like a tank), and you need to think a little about how you're going to mount it, since some cheap desktop stands can barely manage it.
Some things to keep in mind are:
1) It likes close-miking (at least for male voices)
2) It is USB-only
3) It is a on the bit large and heavy side.
If those don't bother you, and the price is in your range, then you will probably like it a lot.

Alesis IO2 Express Review

Alesis IO2 Express
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got this unit with some reserve....I had an M-audio Fast Track, and I was not sure why the Alesis was so affordable and with 2 IN for the instruments or mic.
The quality of the case is very low; cheap plastic for the case and the knobs, same for the switches and mic connectors; the only metal parts are the 3.5 inch jack where you plug your guitars or your external equipment, and the headphone OUT
The unit itself looks cheap, but what it matters is what it does; and this pup does it right.
I've hooked it to my Mac pro via USB, and as soon as i plugged it, Snow leopard recognized it; I just had to switch my audio settings to redirect the audio in, audio out and system sounds to the io2 and everything is set up.
I am happy to hear no noise even if the volume is cranked up, while wearing headphones; this means that either the circuit board is well done, or the unit is well shielded from external interference (the fasttrack would give a disturbing hiss now and then; that would disappear if i would change position to the unit of few inches)
The mic in works great; plugged in a mic and it works just fine; setting the knobs is a cakewalk since they are pretty precise and does not make any noise while twisting them (again, means that the people that put this together did a good job shielding the unit; we will see how good is shielded from dust, since that is one of the main causes of noise while twisting the knobs)
the Line in/Guitar in works also great; plugged in my guitar and increased the gain and the sound was really good; tried it with garageband and guitar rig 4 and the latency was under 10ms; versus 18ms with the FastTrack; the Phantom +48v is also useful if you just plug the guitar without amplifier; in this way you can use a sound modeling software like guitar rig and play nice effects directly into your computer, saving the hassle to bring in interference and other noise that would come from the amplifier or pedal.
The recording was also awesome; you can tell that the quality is high when you listen at something recorded with the io2, using Bose headphones or a good audio equipment; the quality was same if not better of a 196kbps MP3, even at high volume and using software equalizer.
The chance to use 2 IN at the same time (2 guitars, guitar and mic, mic and line in and so on) opens up a lot of possibilities; tried with mic and guitar and it works fine; giving you control on each separate channel (the +48v gain works globally on both IN ) with separate knobs for the gain and 2 extra knobs to control the mix between the wet and dry sound (so you can listen the sound of the instrument before being processed by the computer, and after)and to control the main level.
In the end i give this unit a 5 star, since even if is cheaply made; feels pretty solid when you actually use it; and cost much less than any other comparable external usb unit for mac.

Shure X2U XLR-to-USB Signal Adapter Review

Shure X2U XLR-to-USB Signal Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this specifically to see if I could use this with Dragon Naturally Speaking and hopefully improve my recognition accuracy by some tiny amount. I can't say if it succeeds at that or not; Dragon is one contrary beast of a program. Nonetheless, when I use this for other purposes, such as simple voice recording, I've noticed nothing but clean sound and plenty of gain.
There are a number of presumably comparable devices out there made by the likes of OSP, Marshall, Alesis, Lightsnake, and others. I started by purchasing Marshall's XLR-USB adapter and found it had a really weak signal that usually needed to be normalized at a MUCH higher volume. I sold that at a small loss on eBay so I could try something else and this was it. (To be fair, it appears that Marshall has re-designed their USB adapter and I think the second version may have addressed this concern.)
The reviews I've read on the OSP and Lightsnake adapters seem to indicate they are not really balanced input, and that inside the box the 2nd and 3rd pins (hope I recall that correctly) are soldered together just like in a simple bal-unbalanced adapter. I don't believe that's the case here.
So far I totally disagree with other reviewers here claiming it's noisy. I've observed no noise.
Sturdy, solid construction. Has some heft to it; in fact, a bit heavy for its size. You really don't want to attach it to a mic directly if you intend on holding it very long, especially if you're a young aspiring starlet. :-)
My only minor detractor is I wish the phantom power button were designed so it's difficult to press by accident. This is the single most overlooked design flaw in mic preamps in general. You can press the phantom power button by mistake and according to some authorities, destroy a very expensive mic by accident. I can't afford many quality mics and so this isn't much of a risk for me. :-)
I have tried and presently own a handful of mic preamps and USB adapters, including the ART USB Dual Pre and an Edirol UA-25EX, and have tried a variety of higher-end USB soundcard devices. This compares pretty favorably with any of them, given its simple purpose. I think as far as usb-powered mono xlr-usb adapters go, you're not likely to do much better presently. You can certainly get a cheaper one, but this is clearly built to Shure's solid design standards and will outlast any of them.

Line 6 GearBox Silver Bundle with Toneport D.I. USB Recording Interface Review

Line 6 GearBox Silver Bundle with Toneport D.I. USB Recording Interface
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In XP, this thing was great. I upgraded to Vista, and now the outputs have an unacceptable pop and crackle. The Line6 forums are all abuzz about this problem, and there is no solution yet.
I heartily apologize. There was no solution at Line6, but I eventually ran across a fix. Unsurprisingly, Vista is to blame, specifically the power profiles on Vista. The fault lay in the processor power-state transitions. This works ok on Vista on a laptop if you select the "Always On" power state. (Actually, there's an occasional pop even then; if you disable power state transitions in your BIOS, I think you can get rid of them.)
My apologies, and I revise my rating to four stars.

I have to say that I am really impressed with version 2.0 of Guitar Tracks. They completely redesigned the user interface, which looks great, and made it really easy to use. Both this and the Presonus FireStudio are quite awesome audio interfaces. Never heard a pop and static is phenomenally low. It is built like a TANK and I'm sure it could withstand a beating. Preamps work great. The only downside, and I mean the only bad thing about this interface is that MIDI requires a breakout cable. Not a big deal but it's just something you could lose easily. M-Audio Fast Track Ultra High-speed 8 x 8 USB 2.0 Interface Review

M-Audio Fast Track Ultra High-speed 8 x 8 USB 2.0 Interface
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I've gone through many different operating systems and computers, and drivers and have not had ANY issues with this product. It works flawlessly on XP/XP SP1/2 and Vista. It has a couple very minor issues on Vista X64 but nothing that would break the work flow noticeably.
I'll begin by saying that it has probably the best layout I have ever seen on a sound card. It is also the most powerful at the time for USB sound cards all together. It has 6 1/4 inch inputs on the back very well laid out, and 6 matching 1/4 inch outputs on the back aswell... this setup keeps wires nice and neat (unlike others where you gotta plug stuff in all over the place in all directions.....
on the front you could either hook up four mics or two mics and two instruments.... what nice is that the first two inputs can either be xlr or 1/4 inch..... All four inputs have knobs right there on the front to control the preamps for each channel individually. Also on the front.... TWO, not one, TWO headphone outputs with individual volume controlls and LED's to indicate clipping and signal (that can be assigned to play different channels alltogether). And of course there is a volume control, right there on the front. What I should note is that there are four buttons to switch from the front inputs to the back ones.
Some other nice features include an input and output for an insert effect (so you can hook up for example a compressor)... the only flaw with it (actually what' nice is that I called m-audio and they took a unit from their warehouse, set it up, and tinkered with it trying to figure it out).... but anyways the only flaw is that it cannot be inserted to any channels but channels 1/2..... Of course the thing has phantom power but if you choose to run with it off you can still use normal mics... What's also so nifty is that if you want to go somewhere with a lap top for example you can ditch the power supply alltogether and still have channels 1/2 for input and output powered by the USB bus.
The latency on this card is great... I can't say it's as perfect as I want it to be (especially with Vista x64) but I can safely run a 128 sample buffer running under 10ms completely safely and if no input is needed and those are disabled a 4 ms delay is pretty safe and works great....Another great thing is the software mixer, you can route just about anything into anything else, it simply makes this card have no limits as far as routing (except for that insert effect thing but I don't really use it anyways since I use the daw for that)The only serious issue is that after switching to Vista x64 I have not been able to get the "High Performance Mode" to work which affects the buffer a little bit.
Other then that, solid 5/5... I've recommended this product to many people, all have bought it, all had no problems.
The biggest issue with this card is people, people that can't install the damn driver. It's a little bit more of a pain in the butt then simply installing a CD but if you follow directions it will work.

The Fast Track Ultra 8 x 8 audio/MIDI interface takes M-Audio's acclaimed mobile recording line to the next level with high-speed USB 2.0 connectivity, MX Core DSP mixer and four preamps with award-winning Octane technology. Featuring both analog and digital I/O, it allows recording on all eight channels simultaneously with pristine 24-bit/96kHz fidelity--while M-Audio's mature low-latency drivers ensure rock-solid stability and performance. The on-board MX Core DSP mixer processes eight hardware inputs and eight software returns to the eight hardware outputs, delivering flexible routing and monitoring with delay and reverb. Compatible with most major audio software*, Fast Track Ultra lets you record the way you want--in the studio or on the go.

High-speed USB 2.0 Technology The next generation of mobile recording interfaces has arrived--the Fast Track Ultra features high-speed USB 2.0 technology for advanced performance. Like FireWire, USB 2.0 delivers the bandwidth for 24-bit/96kHz audio resolution throughout the recording and monitoring process. The increased data speed lets you enjoy exceptional fidelity on all of your inputs and outputs simultaneously.
Built-in Effects Processing Tired of tracking vocals and instruments dry? Fast Track Ultra features MX Core DSP technology that gives you reverb and delay on the headphone outputs with separate sends for every channel. Adding effects is an easy way to inspire creativity and infuse a performance with new energy--without taxing your CPU resources.
Make the Connection Fast Track Ultra provides a complete recording solution, with six channels of analog inputs and outputs plus 2-channel digital S/PDIF I/O. Unlike most USB interfaces, it features two dedicated inserts on the first two channels, giving you the ability to insert outboard processing before A/D conversion. Easy connection via a single USB 2.0 cable delivers both audio and MIDI communication with your computer. Compatibility with most major audio software, means seamless integration into any studio setup.
MX Core DSP Technology for Sophisticated Channel Routing The Fast Track Ultra makes it easy to create multiple monitor mixes when recording other musicians. The robust MX Core mixer employs an array of eight individual DSP cores to deliver near-zero latency and a matrix for sophisticated channel routing options--accessible via an intuitive control panel that utilizes a separate mixer for each pair of outputs. The mixer expands the total I/O to an impressive 16 x 8 configuration, allowing you to connect synths and outboard gear to any of the interface's hardware inputs, then mix them with the eight audio streams coming from your computer.
Professional Octane Preamp Technology The quality of your recordings is only as good as the initial signal. The Fast Track Ultra features four preamps with multi-award-winning M-Audio Octane technology, creating a premium front end that delivers amazing audio clarity. You get professional, low-noise, high-gain preamplification with enough channels for a variety of miking applications. Features include +48V phantom power for condenser mics, signal/peak LED indicator lights and a pull-out gain knob that activates a 20dB pad for recording at high volumes. See why world-class artists choose the M-Audio Octane preamp.
Dual Headphone Amp Whether you usually track vocals or an ensemble, you're likely to need multiple headphone mixes. Fast Track Ultra has two completely independent headphone outputs so you can take advantage of the DSP mixer's powerful routing options and create the right mix for your performers--complete with reverb and delay.
The Perfect Combination Apple's latest MacBook and MacBook Air laptops don't include FireWire connectivity--the latest models are all about USB 2.0. Tascam Track Pack T1 US122L Soundcard with Micrphone Pack Review

Tascam Track Pack T1 US122L Soundcard with Micrphone Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm using this with a relatively new MacBook and GarageBand. And it sorta works. The updated driver still leaves the Mic VERY quiet and the guitar input not much better. The input dials need to be turned all the way up to get any input. Maybe a 64-bit drive would help, but now Tascam has discontinued this model, so I'm not holding my breath.

Line 6 POD Farm Review

Line 6 POD Farm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already had a decent understanding of how Pod Farm worked . In a matter of 15 minutes i had the Metal sound i'd been looking for in Guitar emulated Plug Ins . I've used Amplitube 3 , Guitar Rig 4 etc. and "NONE" of them can i get the kind of grit Metal sound i have with Pod Farm ... In "NO" way am i discrediting either of them . In My Melodic Heavy Metal Band , We play through LINE 6 HD147 Stacks that we've grown pig headed of the sound they create for us . Nonetheless , The compliments that we've gotten from them are just awesome . We are recording in Cubase 5 , And i removed the Amplitube 3 Plugins from the Inserts chain and replaced them with Pod Farm and "WOW", Nothing less than amazing . I haven't really messed around much with all the other features of Pod Farm , At the moment i'm so satisfied with our sound that i haven't had no reason to . My shopping experience has been picture perfect with "AMAZON.COM", I definately will be shopping through them for "ALL" my musical needs 4 sure ... Thanx so much AMAZON - You Da Bomb ...
