Rode NTK Tube Condenser Microphone Review

Rode NTK Tube Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great mic - excellent sound. I have been a pro voiceover artist for over 30 years and have dealt with a variety of studio mics. In building my own studio I really wanted a front end that had a clear and smooth full-range sound. The R0de NTK was recommended to me by another "big voice" artist, and completely lives up to the recommendation. Everyone I have talked to says it's about the best value out there. If you have cash to blow, you can get a "noyyyyyymannnnn" (raise eyebrows here), or you can enjoy the sound of this mic and take the extra $3200 and spend it on more gear. The hard plastic padded case for the mic and power supply are a nice touch. Don't forget to buy a shock mount for it!
Enjoy -

I bought this after reading a review that compared it favorably to some very expensive ($10K+) mics. I don't have a $10K+ mic to compare it to, but it is a definite step up from several very good $400 mics that I use for recording guitar, mandolin and vocals. It is a terrific value and a very very good mic.

Just bought this for presentation recordings and hooked it up via audio mixer via USB to Laptop, sound is crisp after a few minutes of practice placing it on a jacket/shirt and really helps isolate your voice during instructional scenes. Phantom powered (total novice but read up and worked it out) so needs a mixer/power source for it to work. Great build qulaity, preamp is heavy and sturdy (clippable in back pocket)
Hope this helps enjoy!

RODE NT1A Cardioid Condenser Microphone Review

RODE NT1A Cardioid Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are in to producing/engineering and want a super mean condensor mic without spending alot of cash, this is one to get; very cheap with an extremely expensive sound. It does not have any polar switches or any built in eq's, but most all DAW's do have eq's and phase reverse abilities. Plus, its better to cut freq's that are there, then to try and boost freq's that aren't there; the latter is impossible actually. I'm telling you, don't let the price tag throw you off; this baby makes everything sound good. I've used it on vocals, acoustic guitars, drums as an overhead/ride mic as well as a room mic for ambience. I also have a matched pair of NT 5's that are also absolutely amazing. Rode is a great Australian company that makes amazing mics with a 10 year warranty; yep...10 years. Get one, you won't be dissapointed. Remember though, bad acoustics = bad recording sound.

Rode NT2000 Vocal Condenser Microphone Review

Rode NT2000 Vocal Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everyone should have a multi-pattern mic around for utility purposes and this is the one I chose after demoing a half-dozen of interest (I had particularly high hopes for the Blue Mics). Aside from one super-expensive, and unnamed mic, the Rode NT2000 was actually my favorite by quite a margin. As I regard this type of mic as a utility piece, I was looking for a mic that was fairly neutral on voice/cardioid and without too heavy a proximity effect, airy and crisp on omni, and had to have an attentuation switch.
The NT2000 has all that, plus a rugged build. I've been very pleased since purchase, having used it for voice, acoustic guitar (could probably use a warmer mic here), cab miking on electric, bagpipes, recording ambience, and percussion. I'm especially pleased with the mic's ability to capture detail in high sound pressure conditions.
The NT2000 has continuously variable patterns, not a fixed selection of patterns. It has a variable pad, not a simple cut type attentuation switch, which really helps in nailing the sound without having to compromise the mic's position. Finally, the high-pass filter is also continuously variable. All go a long way in making this a HIGHLY adaptable mic.
After my demos, I went in to buy one mic, got an offer I couldn't refuse on two, and walked away poorer but happier! You won't be able to equal that price, as it was something of a favor, but the price here is good.
Although I love NT2000's sound and capabilities, I'm not wild about the controls (pattern, etc.). These aren't knobs you grab and turn - they're thin and flat. They have an edge pattern, but I can't turn them reliably by trying to grab the edges. I have to put my thumb on the knob surface and rotate it that way. It works and the knobs won't get accidently moved, but it's not exactly the height of convenience.
Great multipurpose mics.

Shure SM94 Instrument Microphone Review

Shure SM94 Instrument Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This mic is truthful. If you are a really good singer, this mic will make your voice sound professional; if you are not, then this mic will reveal your flaws. It has a flat frequency response and very low distortion, as well as very low handling noise. It must be used with the A3WS windscreen to prevent breath pops. Also, it should be held about four inches away.
I do not recommend this mic for rock or rap, as it works best at a distance, which would increase the chance of feedback. Other Shure mics such as the PG-58 are better for rock.
This mic runs on an AA battery, or phantom power. It is an ELECTRET condenser mic, which means it is not humidity sensitive like regular studio condenser mics.

Shure Beta 57A Microphone Review

Shure Beta 57A Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Beta series is the step above the incredibly popular SM series by Shure. The 57s are typically used to mic instruments and the 58s mainly for vocals. It is a dynamic microphone, so it's rugged enough for any situation, but is built to a much higher standard than typical dynamics so you get a lot more range and detail than you might expect.
I have used the 57 for a wide variety of instruments and vocals with great success both live and in the studio.
The Beta57 is excellent on snare, acoustic guitar, electic guitar, horns and wind instruments in addition to being a great vocal microphone. The supercardioid pattern ensures much more flexibility on stage with less chance of feeding back.
Overly loud bands with demanding vocalists who need as much as you can give them in the monitors, this is a life saver. Snare top and bottom. High hats when I don't want the bleed that a condenser would give. This is my go to mic for live applications.

Rode Podcaster USB Dynamic Microphone Review

Rode Podcaster USB Dynamic Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For recording my voice (baritone), it does a great job. For extra warmth that means close-miking, which in turn means not popping your p's, etc. If you hold it close to your mouth but don't directly face it end-on, that's easily done (or get a pop filter). [...].
The microphone electronics are extremely quiet - the audio is sampled at 18 bits.
It comes with a warranty which is easily extended to 10 years for free.
The real-time headphone monitoring is a great idea and works well.
It's a bit heavy (part of being built like a tank), and you need to think a little about how you're going to mount it, since some cheap desktop stands can barely manage it.
Some things to keep in mind are:
1) It likes close-miking (at least for male voices)
2) It is USB-only
3) It is a on the bit large and heavy side.
If those don't bother you, and the price is in your range, then you will probably like it a lot.

Shure SM58LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone Review

Shure SM58LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first rule of microphones is that, "No one microphone is perfect for every purpose." Rule two is, "Experiment with different mics in different applications to find your signature sound." I've used Shure SM58's along with their ancestors and relatives back to 1968. I primarily used them for broadcasting and recording spoken word content but I have used (and still do use) them for singing some back up vocals. The SM58 does one thing well and that is vocal performance when used very close to the mouth for public address use. Some people, me included, actually sound better and more comfortable in a live performance setting when using another mic, the Shure SM-57. The SM-58 is a very good vocal mic and for some people probably the best choice. For example, anyone who can not resist putting the mic right up against their lips while singing will probably want the SM-58. People with softer or weaker voices will want the SM-58. The SM-58 is highly directional and has a noticable yet manageable proximity effect (which means the bass increases the closer you get.) This mic does not pick up well from much over 8 inches away. The reason so many singers think you are supposed to shove microphones practically inside your mouth is because the ball type Shure vocal mics require you to get them very close or they don't sound right. On the other hand, the SM-57 sounds best several inches away from the user's mouth and works fine up to 12 inches away. While the SM-58 is certainly the number one professional PA vocal mic, there are precious few other uses for it because it has a colored sound with a prominent frequency response boost in the upper midrange plus a sound source has to be very close before it is picked up clearly. It works ok for conga drums and the like, but the SM-58 is about the last thing you'd want to use to mic a sax or guitar. Personally these mics are not the best for my mic technique or the basic nature my voice, but for some people they sound great. The live vocal mic that works best for me is the Shure SM-57 with a windscreen. However for other people the SM-58 works better. It depends on your voice and what you want the mic to do. If you have a very deep voice, the SM-58 might be the second best choice after the SM-57 which has a better low frequency response. One certain advantage of the SM-58 is the excellent gain before feedback capability. This mic can be turned up louder than almost any other mic without that annoying PA squeal. Another advantage of the SM-58 is that it is still available (at a slight extra cost) with a built-in on/off switch. The SM-58's ball shaped grills are very sturdy and even if you should dent one you can get a replacement which screws right on for about ten dollars. I've seen SM-58's dented, rusty, dusty, smoked up, spit into, with pieces missing and slammed into a hardwood stage with the full weight of a boom stand adding mass to the fall and yet I've never seen but one stop working and that malfunction was due to an on/off switch that got dirt in it. All the pro-line Shure mics are top quality. The pro line Shures also hold their value well. If you buy one and decide you don't like it, you can get about what you paid for it on eBay. I would compare as many mics as possible before buying one. Senneheiser's EVOLUTION mics sound really good too and are worth a look. The SM-58 will be the number one on-stage vocal mic for the forseeable future because most people follow the crowd instead of actually trying out different mics and picking the one that works best for their particular voice. These things are so durable that even if they stopped making them today they'd still be around for another 20 years at least.

Rugged construction, a proven shock-mount system, and a steel mesh grille ensure that even with rough handling, the SM58 will perform consistently, outdoors or indoors.

The Standard for Dynamic Vocal Mics You'll find multiple SM58s in most any studio or live music venue--no doubt you've heard of them. The SM58's frequency response is tailored for vocals, with brightened midrange and bass rolloff. The uniform cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source and minimizes background noise, which is ideal for vocals, especially in live situations where background noise is substantial.
The microphone's pneumatic shock-mount system cuts down handling noise, making it a great choice for handheld vocals, and the built-in wind/pop filter helps keep things in check.
The dark gray, enamel-painted, die-cast metal case has legendary looks and--paired with the mesh grille--legendary toughness.

Rode Boompole Microphone Boom Arm Review

Rode Boompole Microphone Boom Arm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Online information about this boompole is inadequate, so I thought I would write a quick first impression review.
I just purchased the Rode Mini Boompole as a handy little boom for run and gun audio. It will mainly be used with my new Tascam DR-100 portable digital recorder and external XLR mics, mostly Rode NT-4 stereo and a Sennheiser MKH 40.
My other pole is a Gitzo, but not carbon fiber. So I am working with cheap gear, not the fancier booms that full time production audio guys use.
The Rode Mini Boompole is made from aluminum tubing. It arrived with evidence of residual manufacturing oil. I wiped it down with no bad effects. I'd characterize build quality as better than a lot of indy filmmaker gear, which features a lot of improvisational engineering - dollies made with skateboard wheels and such. Machine work on locking collets is good looking and everything works well. When you disassemble the pole, as I did in an attempt to load a mic cable internally, the machine work in thread cutting is not as polished. But it is completely acceptable in a $100 item that works very well.
The Rode Mini Boompole appears large enough to feed an XLR connector internally, but this turns out not to be the case. The pole's throat is slightly too small, which appears to be a design oversight. Still, the smallest extension on the mic end of the pole is much larger than my Gitzo, which is barely large enough to thread a permanent cable before the XLR connector is affixed.
The Rode Mini Boompole does have machined channels at both ends where a permanent internal cable could be installed if desired. It also comes with velcro straps used to secure a cable externally, which is what I did when mounting my Rode NT-4 stereo mic.
I like the dense open cell hand grip material covering the entire first section of the pole. The rubber end at the base is a bit under engineered, if someone is going to rest the pole end on the ground during breaks in production. Just a flat disk of rubber less than a quarter inch. I would expect something a little more rugged and robust.
So far, I have only used the boompole in a noisy environment (high school football). Even without a suspension mount on the Rode NT-4 stereo mic, I did not notice any handling noise, even though I was listening and testing a bit. Likewise, using the supplied velcro straps to secure the mic cable externally did not seem to cause problems.
My initial reaction about weight was a bit of concern, but this turned out to be no problem, even with the largish Rode NT-4 mounted using an internal 9-volt battery in lieu of phantom power off the recorder.
In general, I enjoyed using this boompole. My application is fairly casual, no long tiresome booming. For quick sound grabbing, this is a nice addition to my kit at very low cost. I'm happy with the purchase, and would recommend it to others.

Shure PG185 Condenser Lavalier Microphone, QG Review

Shure PG185 Condenser Lavalier Microphone, QG
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first photo is the correct Shure Microphone. The two follow up pictures submitted by a user are NOT the correct mic. The unit has a standard Shure Mini XLR plug, NOT the Locking stereo mini (1/8") plug displayed in picture two. It can be easily rewired to add a standard XLR or other connector plug. Also, the lavalier mic element is the one in the first picture, NOT the one in the third picture. Unit comes with lapel clip and two windscreens. It is an excellent value for the money.

Shure PG48 Vocal Microphone with XLR-to-XLR Cable

This mic is typical of Shure: good and tough. For the price, don't expect studio performance; this is a good mic for garage bands, karaoke, anywhere you don't want to shell out on for the superb SM series. It is a good sounding mic that does what it's supposed to.

Rode SVM Stereo Condenser Microphone Review

Rode SVM Stereo Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a Canon HG10 High Definition camera that I use for recording my small kids and family events. The camera's built-in sound was just poor. With my default mic, the targets could barely be heard, and whenever the cameraman spoke the sound was overly pronounced. So I researched many mics over months and decided on this one.
The sound is superb, but you have to make sure you know what you are working with. Different mics are better for different situations. I am not an expert but here are the rules of thumb I have picked up.
*Super-Cartoid Stereo Mic*
The Rode Stereo mic is a "Super Cartoid Stereo Mic". It yields high-quality sound at a close range, less than 8 feet or closer is best . It emphasizes sound in front, and de-emphasizes sound from behind (i.e. the cameraman) It does not do well at long range.
*Shotgun mics*
Shotgun mics (i.e. Rode VideoMic directional Video Condenser w/microphone) on the other hand do well at isolating sound at long ranges. However, the sound will never be as good as a well-placed Supercartoid stereo mic. Those are good for school plays, football games, and such.
*Bonus*
It also comes with a Dead-cat wind guard, and it works great! Even in very gusty wind no sound is made from the wind.
*Tips for good sound*
For absolutely super quality sound with ANY mic you must get really close! Just think of those boom mic guys who hold the mic right inches over the actors heads! You have several options.
1- Stand as close as possible
2 - Buy a wide-angle lense for your camera (Canon WD-H43 0.7x Wide Angle Converter for HV20 & HV30 Camcorders). I did this and it makes a huge difference. The lense allows you to get much closer to the subject and the sound is super.
3 - Buy an extension cable and mini-tripod. This is only practical in some situations, but is not expensive. I did this when I wanted to film thanksgiving dinner. I placed the mic close to the table, just out of shot. I placed the camera far away, and then ran a 15' cable between the mic and camera. I got a great shot and top-notch sound.
4 - Buy a boom pole (Rode Mini Boompole Microphone Boom Pole) and have a friend hold it over the subject's head when filming. This is not practical since I do not own a boom pole and I do not have any friends. But Rode does sell a boom pole for this mic that requires no adapters.
*Warranty*
My 4-year old accidentally knocked the mic off a table and broke a small aluminum part. I contacted Rode and was amazed at how incredibly kind, accommodating, and prompt they were in helping me out.
Be sure to register your mic to get a 10-year warranty!

**UPDATE**
Since writing this post I actually got the other mic; the RODE shotgun mic: Rode VideoMic directional Video Condenser w/microphone
Since I now own and use both, I have more to add.
The SVM is of much better construction than the Video Mic. The SVM uses aluminium, while the less expensive Video Mic uses plastic.
I use them interchangeably now, and though I wish I could say that the more pricey RODE SVM is plain better than the RODE Video (shotgun) mic, they are actually different tools for different jobs.
Here are situations for using each mic:
Use the RODE SVM (Super-Cartoid Stereo Mic) for:
-The camera person is talking (the camera person comes though balanced and clear)
-Indoor quiet settings (amazing, beautiful clear sound)
-Outdoors where you want superior ambient sound (crashing of the waves, seagulls, people talking in the background, etc)
-Concerts or live performances (or other really loud settings where you want to capture the full sound)
-Voice overs (if you get inches away from the mic the sound is nearly as good as a professional DVD voice over)
Use the RODE Video Mic Shotgun Rode VideoMic directional Video Condenser w/microphone for:
-The camera person will NOT be talking much. (the camera person's voice loses clarity, and is a little muffled.)
-Indoor Parties (where you want to catch the subject talking, and exclude other sound)
-Outdoor Fairs or the beach (where you want to catch the subject talking)
Bottom line, The SVM does do a good job capturing a subjects voice in a noisy setting, but the Video Mic does it better. Otherwise the SVM is superior in all regards.
