(More customer reviews)I wanted to write a review for this, because we were skeptical about buying it with so little reviews. It's awesome! It's just what it says, so far. We haven't used it on stage, yet, but testing it out has been a lot of fun. Since we're using it for children's entertainment shows, in gymnasiums, the vocal effects won't be very useful. It's very portable, and I love the way it packs up like a suitcase.
If I remember, I'll update this review once we actually use it in a show. Until then, don't be afraid of it, lol. I thought it was too good to be true, but not yet!
We were looking at a couple of different "portable PA" systems and I this one had more power, and less bad reviews than the other, more expensive and more popular set ups... which is why we risked it and went for this one.

Boss BR600 Digital Multitrack Recorder Review

Expect This:
1) Small
2) Light weight
3) Excellent sound quality
4) Easy to operate basic features
5) Can back up songs to computer (and reload them back into unit)
6) Programmable drums (you can string together patterns into a "song" or tap in your own patterns)
7) Nice amp modeling (lots of "stomp box" settings and Bass guitar simulations so you can play bass with a regular guitar..and it sounds believable)
8) Nice effects (reverb, chorus, delay, comp. limit, etc.) that you can program to some extent
9) Has a line in so you can use an external mixer if you want
10) Onboard stereo Mic is astonishlingly clear and sensitive (you can record live gigs with nothing plugged in)
11) Seperate rhythm track fader so you don't waste a track for drums
12) 64 virtual tracks so you can have different 8 different performances on say Track 1 (but you can only play select and play one at a time...but cool for alternate versions of a song)
13) Cut and paste performance data on the same track or between tracks
14) Punch in/out recording so you can zero in and re-record over "bad sections"
15) Pitch correction that actually will correct your off key singing (not the best quality but ok)
16) Excellent tool for the singer/songwriter to "flesh out" ideas into a digital quality recording
Don't Expect This:
1) No way to sync with external sequencer (no SMPTE or MTC)
2) Can only record two "things" at a time (guitar/mic, 2 mics, or 2 guitars) unless you use external mixer
3) Easy access to features (with a single small LED display you are stuck with "menu trees")
4) The batteries to last long. I put new batteries in and got the "low battery" message only after 1 hour of use. I use AC all the time so not a big deal to me.
5) The 125 Meg card to hold more than about a single fullup 8 track song (get the 1Gig card immediately...only about $30)
6) To have 8 independent tracks. You have 4 mono tracks and 2 stereo tracks so it is really a cross between a 6 track and 8 track recorder...depending on how you look at it.
7) Export your whole song in .WAV or .AIFF format (only individual mono/stereo tracks can be exported so do all your tracks is sort of time consuming...but it can be done)
8) Great microphone performance (the preamp is a little weak...at least for the dynamic cardioid that I use
Given all the above I still give it 5 stars and here is why:
1) Form Factor (small and lightweight)
2) Sound quality
3) Ease of use (to lay down multiple tracks quickly)
4) Onboard rhythm (hundreds of patterns (intros, verses, fills, and ends) that you can string together.
5) Onboard amp modeling (and especially the bass simulation....don't have to buy a bass guitar)
6) Cost....incredible amount of features/quality for $350. I had a studio in LA 15 years ago and this unit is the equivalent of over $5000 worth of gear (8 track cassette deck, effects boxes, bass guitar, guitar amp, and drum machine). I can't believe how all this stuff is now part of something the size/weight of a magazine.
7) Easy backup of data on computer so you can have a downloadable "library" of songs and download them seperately when you want to work on them.
The only feature I wish this thing had was a way to sync up with a DAW sequencer. But you can always export your tracks out as WAV or AIFF files and import them into your DAW.
But for me, I just want something that is always ready to go if I get an idea for a song and I don't want to have to boot up a computer or play with a bunch of cords and gear. I just turn this thing on with nothing attached, grab my acoustic guitar, and sing/play thru the built in Mics to "get the idea down". Then I go back later and "do it right".
My two tips are:
1) Get the 1Gig card as the 125Meg card is just too small for real work
2) And "if" you are unhappy with the Mic sound, run your Mic into a preamp and feed the signal into the unit thru the line in. When I did this my vocals became "alive". The guitar in has plenty of "oomphf".
I love this unit. It does everything a singer/songwriter who wants to quickly sketch out ideas could want. And if you want to do some quality recording it will do that too.

The sounds are very realistic, with the new sound engine they have put in place, when playing the piano sounds beside a real piano, the difference is almost impossible to notice, the tones and accompaniments are also very great.

The lessons are great, they phase the music, and you take it in steps, and if its too fast for you, you can by the press of a button, slow it down to your speed, its user friendly.
Connections - 5/5
The USB MIDI function just works effortlessy, works with keyboard learning software, Finale 2009, and much more, when I opened Finale with the MIDI connected, it just started interpreting what I was playing without have to configure anything in the software.
Look & Layout - 5/5
It looks great, although 61 keys, very convenient, its very light, u can easily carry the stand and the keyboard around without much effort, the layout is very user friendly and its easy to navigate, and the user manual tells you how to perform tasks in detail not readily seen. The Key-lighting function is really cool and very helpful in the step up lessons, only 10 can light at a time, but its also very cool for night playing as well.
Overall - 5/5
Its a great keyboard, I'd recommend it for anyone, dont spend so much on a keyboard just yet, this is the one you must get, if 61-keys is all you need, otherwise, feel free to check out the 88-keys keyboards.

Roland CUBEST CUBE Street Battery Powered Stereo Black Amplifier Review

(More customer reviews)When I first saw this amp, I thought, man, 5 watts ain't going to cut it. When I play on the street I use a 50 watt Crate Limo (a great amp, by the way). I couldn't understand why Roland would put out such an under powered product.
Now I understand. It is a LOUD little amp. I'm amazed. And it sounds so good. When I first got it, I plugged in a guitar and couldn't stop playing. The amp modeling and the effects are wonderful.
This amp is aimed at solo performers and street musicians, and would make a nice practice amp. This amp works well for the steet and small venues. If you're a typical loud, obnoxious guitar player, you might want to look elsewhere for a product that more suits your needs.

Biggest drawback for anyone who wants to capture at high fs and bit depth but with repurpose option for Red Book CD is the lack of 88.2 kHz sampling rate. This is a HUGE oversight in my opinion.

Behringer EPA40 PA System Review

(More customer reviews)I bought 4 Behringer EPA40 portable PA systems for my company because we were hosting a large open house tour with 4 chartered busses. Turns out modern motor coaches almost always have built-in PA systems, but the Behringers still proved useful for crowd management at frequent stops on our parade of homes.
This is a fairly specialized device. The only competition is athletic bull horns, with poor audio quality, and a very comparable portable PA unit from Fender, the guitar company most famous for Stratocaster guitars (Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton). Frankly, I would have preferred the Fender unit even at about twice the cost, but at 4 units, there was a $400 spread between Behringer and Fender.
I own larger portable AC-powered Fender PA equipment, too, and it is excellent.
These Behringer portable PAs are quite serviceable, but the design is odd, something like a quarter section of watermellon, and the color is weird, too, somewhere between blue and purple. Fender definitely wins for appearance and industrial design. The Behringers are made out of hard plastic, which might tend to shatter if dropped, though mine are lightly used and this is not a big consideration.
The microphones are decent for the intended purpose, but do not use standard CANNON 3-wire mic cables, but rather an unbalanced 1/4" plug. So the mics are dedicated to this device. The mic does contain a mute switch.
Run time is something like 6 or 8 hours, so these units could conceivably be used in classroom sized meetings or break-out sessions.
I don't have one of these devices in front of me right now, but I believe the speaker can be mounted on a standard mic stand, making for a self-contained battery powered mini PA.
The battery is an easily removable lead acid type, which can be replaced locally anywhere at an industrial battery supplier. Probably not a big consideration, but nice to know you can get generic parts locally anytime in the future. The battery is similar to those used in a computer UPS, only smaller and lighter, more suited to the handheld nature of this device.
The Behringer is easily handled by almost anyone, men, women and children. It includes a shoulder strap for walking and talking tours. There is space inside the battery compartment, which opens to the rear, to store the strap internally. Unfortunately, there is no internal storage for the mic, mic cable, or battery charger, which is external inline type, thankfully not a bulky wall wart.
Lack of internal storage along with odd shape means this device has a lot of parts to keep track of. I can't confirm specifics on this battery charger, but one plus I give Behringer is their external power supplies usually have the Behringer name molded into the power supply plastic, or clearly labeled as Behringer. Anymore, with millions of cordless phones, cordless drills, and all sorts of external power supplies, the first order of business for me when opening any manufacturer's box is making sure all the parts are clearly labeled, and if not, making labels with a Brother label machine before things get piled in a lost wire junk box.
In addition to the microphone, the Behringer EPA40 has an auxilary input using a standard 1/8" mono jack. This takes the same size wire used on most Windows PCs, normally color coded pastel green. This is also the same size as a small iPod-sized headphone/earbud jack. The only difference is this input is mono, and so a 2-wire mono Tip-Sleeve type plug should be used, not a stereo 3-wire Tip-Ring-Sleeve (TRS) type connector seen on every headphone and earbud plug on the planet.

TC Helicon Correct XT Vocal Effects Processor Pedal Review

(More customer reviews)First let me put up a disclaimer. This is an item that just came out this month, so I haven't had much time to test every single feature out in full. I also haven't played with connecting it to my VoiceTone Create yet (my Create is not the XT model but the old one) as I want to hear what this can do stand-alone in full. I will be updating this review as time progresses. Expect a note about how well it connects with the VoiceTone Create next week.
Also note that I've only used this with a Supercardioid mic, which the instruction manual suggests for best results. They market the TC-Helicon brand mic (naturally), but I'm using my very trusted Shure Beta 58A Supercardioid Dynamic Microphone. I don't even own a condenser mic because I've always been very impressed with the quality of mic that Shure makes in their dynamic mics. I really can't justify an extra $700 for something that I don't think even sounds as good, nor do I have that kind of money. If I did, I would be getting the TC-Helicon VoiceLive 2 Vocal Effects Processor. If you do use a condenser mic for live performance, you can run the VoiceTone Correct XT through a phantom power mode. As for how well gating and anti-feedback works with a condenser, I cannot comment on how it is affected.
So why write this review right now? I did get to put the new features, anti-feedback and auto-gate, in the XT through very extensive tests. Thus, if you're already commited to getting a VoiceTone Correct and not sure if the added features justify the extra cost (last I saw, the old model is $90 cheaper, but that could be different now) or curious if you should upgrade, then hopefully this review will help you out. So far, in terms of all the other features that existed on the previous VoiceTone Correct, everything seems to be in check.
AUTO-GATE:
My band's practice space is a vocal and audio engineering nightmare. It's a very tiny room with exposed insulation and wood (soon it will be dry wall, but even then, the only thing it has going for it in terms of acoustics is the floor is carpeted). The main amps are ones that were generally favored in the 80s for outdoor concerts. Great for if we start doing some gigs where we need our own equipment, but not the most ideal for what our practice space is. Pretty much the back wall is lined completely with amps for the vocals, guitar and bass. Amps are pointing in just about every direction in the room, so it's pretty much impossible for me to get anywhere close to an ideal set up. Background noise was a confusing mess, and it was a pain to get the set up on the main board to not go red while still hearing a good volume of vocals in the mix. Enter auto-gate.
Just at the default factory settings, it has eliminated all background noise going into the mic. In fact, to pick up my voice at all, I have to have my lips about one inch away from the mic. With a supercardioid, this is actually a good thing as these mics are designed for vocalists to be singing really close to it if not with their lips actually on the mic. So anytime my lips aren't practically making out with my microphone, I'm not meaning for whatever I'm doing to be picked up live. So far, ZERO background noise has leaked through to the mains.
I used to be upset that I couldn't get the mic that I wanted with an on/off switch, but the gating on this pedal is so great that I'm actually glad I don't. It's like I have an adaptive on/off on the mic that knows exactly when I want it on or off, and without the background noise.
ANTI-FEEDBACK:
In terms of anti-feedback, it seems to work well. I can't tell if it's all just because of the gating that has fixed back my feedback issues or not, but I have had no issues since I've been using the Correct XT in our practice space.LIVE COMPRESSION, EQ, DE-ESS:
I will make a couple notes here about these features. By default, the red light for "Warmth" was off. I decided to click it on, so anything I say here is based on that assumption.
Most of my singing-style is clean tone, four-octave range, and I've been fairly pleased with these features so far in terms with how it shapes my voice. I absolutely love the produced sound this pedal is capable of. However, I mostly want to address what this did for my screams. I tried out some of my high screams (imagine Viking/Black metal) with these features. With no additional effects, this device helped shape those screams into something much more rich and thick than any thickening effect I've used on my VoiceTone Create. I imagine the sound when I combine the two is going to be phenomenal.
AUTO-PITCH CORRECTION:
I haven't noticed too much going on here, but I didn't expect to. Every band I've auditioned for has been impressed with my pitch accuracy. The times I do miss a note, it's almost always because I don't know how the vocal part goes on that section, and thus I'm missing it by singing the wrong note as opposed to being flat or sharp. This is based on tuning chromatically, so it only does minor adjustments, not the miracles of Auto-Tune. I will run this through some stress tests and update at a later date.Expect this section to be updated at least three months from now. Since the VoiceTone Correct XT is a brand new item, it's impossible for a consumer review to accurately comment on longevity yet.
So far, all the build quality and sturdiness feels just as good as my VoiceTone Create. I've been stomping on my Create and throwing it around in my trunk for eight months now, and it still feels brand new. I expect I'll get similar treatment from the VoiceTone Correct XT.
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS:
I'm just happy I have something that solves the issues of my band's practice space. That alone is worth the price of this pedal for me. Throw in the produced sound that it adds to live vocals through compression and de-ess, and this thing is just incredible. Some of the EQ and Warmth you may not enjoy, but all settings are adjustable on here and can be used manually or adaptively. Personally, I've been very pleased with the adaptive tones it picked for me. Everyone's voice is different, though, and you may not find the same results here, but it's not difficult to just disable one of the features you don't like.
I also very much like that it can be connected to the computer for firmware updates. As for how much of a difference this makes, only time will tell. For now, it's just an extra blanket of security to make me feel ensured that my pre-amp won't get outdated soon like my VoiceTone Create did when they released the XT version.

(More customer reviews)Happy with it, but mine has one wheel that's got a little friction because the plastic mold isn't perfect on one side. (Lots of little plastic imperfections, but you'll get over that.) Kept it since it still basically rolls. Unlike the top cover, the front and back covers are hinged and don't come off, which is OK, but means is can't stack on another rack. The front really isn't ideal for a mouse pad since you have set it on something to keep the cover from opening up the whole way. The velcro pieces that hold the computer in place don't feel as secure as I'd like, but it seems to work. Still I use it, and it's convenient, especially the way the cables go through holes to connect the computer.
Technically it should be a carry-on size, but some airlines weight the carry-ons now, and with any gear in it, it's likely to be overweight if they weight it. Also, with the hard edges, it usually doesn't quite fit without turning it in many overhead compartments. Again, I've used it on a couple trips just fine so far but I think I'll get more use out of it for local gigs. I wouldn't ever want to check it with any rack gear, though I'd bet the computer would fare fine if done.

Zoom H4 Handy Recorder Review

(More customer reviews)I got both the Zoom H4 and the Edirol R-09. The Zoom goes back, the Edirol stays, even though the Edirol cost $100 more.
Why, then, 4 stars for the Zoom? I'd really like to give it 3-1/2 stars, so it was a tossup between 3 and 4. However, if you know what you are getting into, the 4 stars are well-deserved.
The Zoom has a huge variety of features that the Edirol lacks. The Zoom may even sound the slightest bit better (more open, slightly better high end) when both are used to record with their built in mics. However, this functionality comes with a price--a much more complicated interface.
The Zoom does everything. It records directly to wav and mp3. It's a 4 track recording studio. It serves as computer interface for your guitar. It serves as an effects box. It can emulate four different types of microphones, such as the Shure SM57 and the AKG C414. It's even got a built-in metronome and tuner! If you go to the Samsontech website, you can download the manual in PDF format and be truly amazed.
In order to do all this, the Zoom H4's buttons and controls must necessarily be multi-function. On top of that, it adds a jog dial (like the wheel on a mouse: slide in either direction to change menu choices, push to select the current choice). It is necessary to go two levels deep in the menus to set recording levels manually. The Edirol R-09's interface is so simple and intuitive that many could use it without even looking at the manual. Since all I was looking for was a recorder, the Edirol was the easy choice for me.
The Edirol is quite rightly criticized for how awkward it is to insert and remove batteries. In theory, it's a lot easier to do with the Zoom H4. In practice, I found it just as awkward. I found the SD card much harder to swap out of the Zoom H4 than out of the Edirol R-09.
The Edirol R-09 has four very small rubber buttons on the back. They're too small to notice until someone bumps the surface the recorder is sitting on and the unit doesn't move! The Zoom unit has one rubber button on the back but it didn't seem to grip much.
As the side-by-side photo I uploaded shows, the Zoom H4 is a bit larger than the Edirol R-09. I did not find the H4 so much larger as to be a burden. I did find the Edirol's screen easier to read, however!
One other thing worth noting in the picture is the microphones. A quick glance gives the impression that the way the Zoom's microphones extend from the body makes them particularly vulnerable to damage. However, a closer inspection shows that there is a very stiff thick wire surrounding them, like a sports car's roll bar. They may even be better protected than the Edirol's microphones. I could imagine a problem if the Edirol were grabbed from the sides at the top in a forceful way to remove it from a carrying case.
One other Zoom plus: The Zoom has a true automatic gain control, where the Edirol's is a compressor circuit. The Zoom prevents clipping at high volume where the Edirol boosts low volumes without guarding against clipping.
A Zoom minus: Both devices have level meters. The Zoom has no peak indicator that I could find. The Edirol, in addition to its meters, has an impossible-to-miss LED that blinks when the unit peaks. This makes it very easy to adjust levels properly by using Up and Down buttons on the side of the unit, which can be done even while recording.
One final comment that won't mean much except to other die-hard MiniDisc users who stuck with the MiniDisc despite its shortcomings because its fidelity is so good. The Edirol R-09 is the unit that got me to finally abandon the MiniDisc. If you're a MiniDisc user looking for the features in the Zoom H4, I suspect you'll be very happy to abandon the MiniDisc in favor of the Zoom H4.

(More customer reviews)I bought this device to haul in a trailer for critical mass (this big crazy bike ride that occurs monthly). I had been experimenting with boomboxes and other battery powered speakers but I wasn't satisfied with the volume I was getting from those devices and the bass response wasn't great. I just got this PA and I haven't tested it for battery longevity or anything yet, but I did plug in my iPod and crank it up and WOW, this thing is seriously loud. Much more boom than any boomboxes I've played with and the bass response is really surprising. It takes a little balance between volume on your device (iPod, etc.) and the volume on the built in mixer, but you can get some very nice, clean sound that is VERY loud with nice deep bass. Haven't played with the mic yet. The cabinet feels pretty solid, but will post a follow up review after the ride next week to let you know how it handles. It's VERY heavy and that'll be a challenge for the bike (I'm not looking forward to hills). The manuals say the battery should last 5 hours, so if that holds true, that should be plenty long enough for the full ride.
One wacky thing is that there is no master volume. There is an independent volume for each input (and there are 5 1/4" inputs (which seems like overkill...do people actually have full bands using this thing?). There are also independent bass and treble levels (and an echo...which I find worthless). My hunch is that they have the volume/gain set at a constant to make the device easier to use (one less knob) but it does strike me as odd that they wouldn't have a master level. There is a noticeable hiss as soon as you power the device on and this may be related to that set gain...not sure. The hiss shouldn't be an issue for most people though. It's not like you're going to be playing very quiet music with this beast. Hissing is covered up by the audio running through it in most cases...if you were using it only for speaking/preaching/lecturing, you MAY find it objectionable. I'm using it for music and cranking it way up, so I really don't mind.
And man...for the price, this is a serious deal. The price made me think it was going to be a total piece of junk with a cheap case and thin bass and that the audio would get distorted as soon as it got a little loud, but I am VERY pleasantly surprised. I'm a little worried about how many charges the battery will take before the lifespan of the charge gets significantly shorter. Ideally there would be a way to swap the battery pack out of it, but that's unlikely. Once the battery pack is dead, it's still useful as a plugin PA, but that's of no use to me (I already have a plugin PA).

Tascam 2488 Neo Multitrack Digital Recorder Review

(More customer reviews)I write songs and play acoustic guitar, and going back many years have a number of audio cassette recordings which recently I converted to MP3's and transferred to my computer. I spent some time searching for a digital multitrack recorder which I could use going into the future. Inasmuch as I only use between 4 and 6 tracks per recording, I almost settled for a less expensive machine; but I'm glad I put out the extra few hundred dollars for the Tascam 2488 neo. I especially like the following features:
(1) The autopunch feature is great. It allows me to very easily correct my mistakes without having to re-record an entire track.
(2) The 250 virtual tracks available for each song allow me to do a number of takes for each track and choose the one I like best.
(3) The new Mastering tool is awesome. After reading a couple of books on home recording, I was left with the impression that the final step of mastering is one that perhaps I should hire a professional to do. While I'm sure I could achieve slightly better results doing this, the Tascam 2488 neo does an excellent job of mastering my mixes with the push of a button.
(4) The 80 gig hard drive is more than ample; and it is very easy to transfer both individual tracks and completed songs back and forth between the neo and my computer.
(5 The user's manual is very thorough and easy to understand. In today's world user's manuals often are vague and indecipherable; so anticipating this possibility when I bought the unit, I also bought the DVD tutorial which is sold separately. The tutorial indeed was helpful but turned out to be unnecessary. The user's manual covers everything in detail; and if anything, it spells out the obvious at times.
I could go on: But the most important thing is that I now can make (and have made) multitrack recordings of my songs which appear at least to me to be professionally done. The best thing is that the more I use this machine, the quicker it is becoming to make new recordings because I've discovered the settings I like best and can quickly recall them and use them for different songs.
