Behringer EUroport EPA900 Ultra-Compact 900-Watt 8-Channel Portable PA System Review

Behringer EUroport EPA900 Ultra-Compact 900-Watt 8-Channel Portable PA System
Average Reviews:

I wanted to write a review for this, because we were skeptical about buying it with so little reviews. It's awesome! It's just what it says, so far. We haven't used it on stage, yet, but testing it out has been a lot of fun. Since we're using it for children's entertainment shows, in gymnasiums, the vocal effects won't be very useful. It's very portable, and I love the way it packs up like a suitcase.
If I remember, I'll update this review once we actually use it in a show. Until then, don't be afraid of it, lol. I thought it was too good to be true, but not yet!
We were looking at a couple of different "portable PA" systems and I this one had more power, and less bad reviews than the other, more expensive and more popular set ups... which is why we risked it and went for this one.

Looking for the ultimate portable PA system? The new EPA900 sets up in less than five minutes and delivers articulate, high-fidelity performance. With its twin 450-Watt amplifiers and custom-designed, 2-way loudspeakers, the EPA900 can fill a medium- to large-sized room or project your voice for an incredible distance outdoors. All the accessories you'll need are provided (including a microphone, mic and speaker cables) in a convenient, easy to transport and set up package--and the good news is you don't have to be a sound engineer to run it!

Superb Sound Quality Since we already make some of the best-sounding audio mixers, amplifiers and loudspeakers on the planet, it should come as no surprise that the EPA900 provides far superior sound quality than other products in this class. The two satellite speakers feature custom-designed 10" woofers and 1.35" aluminum-diaphragm compression drivers for incredible fidelity and clarity you might not expect from a loudspeaker system this small!
Control Freak Channels 1 - 4 feature our high-quality Invisible Mic Preamps (IMP), which have been praised for their transparency and headroom. A Level control is provided with a Clip LED, so you can dial in the perfect signal level. We've also provided a Pad switch for those occasions when you have to contend with "hotter" than normal input levels.
+48 Phantom Power Phantom Power is also available, so you can use studio-grade condenser mics. Overall system response is handled by a 7-band stereo graphic EQ, and our proprietary FBQ Feedback Detection System helps you track and eliminate those annoying mic squeals.
Two-Band EQ Additionally, each input channel has a two-band EQ (Bass and Treble), Balance (allowing you to place the signal wherever you want within the stereo image) and an Effects level control. It is important to note that while many of our competitors only provide a reverb switch, the EPA900 features an FX level control per channel with 100 state-of-the-art 24-bit digital FX to choose from. FX can be turned off/on via any standard footswitch (not included).
The Sweet Sound of Reverb, or Delay, or... If you're making a speech, chances are you won't need it, but if you're playing a musical instrument and/or singing, you might want to add some effects. So, we've included a 24-bit stereo FX processor with 100 great-sounding presets including reverb, chorus, flanger, delay, pitch shifter and various multi-effects to sweeten your performance. And if you want to sing along with pre-recorded tapes or CDs, the EPA900's Voice Canceller function can remove virtually all the vocals from music played back through channels 7/8 with the simple flick of a switch.
It's All About Connections The EPA900 comes ready for your input, literally. Channels 1 - 4 accept balanced XLR mics, as well as balanced and unbalanced 1/4-inch line-level sources, such as electronic keyboards and the like. Stereo channels 5/6 and 7/8 accommodate RCA and 1/4" inputs, such as drum machines, keyboard sound modules, etc. All in all, there are enough mic and line-level inputs to handle a small band, and the RCA Tape Out connectors provide the perfect connections for recording your performance.
A Bonus Channel? Want to play some of your favorite tunes at the company picnic? The EPA900 comes equipped with a 1/8" stereo minijack for connecting an MP3 player. Additionally, the Stereo Aux In section features Left and Right 1/4-inch jacks for connecting even more professional audio sources. You don't even have to give up a channel, just control the volume from the player. It's like getting 10 channels for the price of eight!
Everything You Need The EPA900 is a complete system. Just use the built-in wheels to roll it from the car to the stage, set the main unit on a tabletop and deploy the speakers. Connect the high-quality dynamic microphone and hit the power switch--voilá, instant PA system! There is even an onboard storage compartment for the included microphone, accessories and cables. And if you need to add some serious bottom-end to your system, just connect an active subwoofer to the handy Sub Out jack.

PYLE-PRO PWMA330 - 300 Watt VHF Wireless Battery Powered PA System W/Echo
Average Reviews:

This unit has great voice projection. It is inexpensive so your microphone is not of good qulaity. It is great that you do not need a transmitter for the mic to work. Overall voice projection is good when it does work. Your range is limited for the wireless mic to pick your voice up. As a portabel PA I would recommmend it but you should go out and get a better microphone.

Ion Audio Tailgater Portable PA System for iPod Review

Ion Audio Tailgater Portable PA System for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Tailgater is one heck of an iPod dock/speaker. Yes, it is only mono, but most portable docks are too small to truely get stereo imaging anyway. The construction of this unit is very high quality, comparable to true guitar amps. It has a 2-way speaker design, with a ~6" woofer and ~1.5" dome tweeter. The only real con is that it doesn't have any bass/treble adjustment and the default sound is a wee bit muddy, but this can be adjusted using the the iPod/iPhone's EQ. As for volume, it can get LOUD. Even outdoors I rarely go past 1/3 of full volume. Battery life is rated at 8 hrs at 2/3 volume according to the manual. I haven't been able to fully test it yet, but at 1/3 volume it ran for 3+ hrs and the battery meter still showed 3 out of 4 leds lit! So I don't really doubt the 8 hour claim which is awesome and why I bought this little guy in the first place.
Speaking of iPhones, I can report it works great with my iPhone 3G. You do get the "this device is not made for iPhone" warning and asks to be put in airplane mode, but it plays AND CHARGES my iPhone just fine even without being in airplane mode. I also didn't hear any of the typical phone interference you get with most other docks, which is probably due to the size of the unit which gives the audio components some space from the actual iPhone.
Regarding its portable "PA system" claims, a microphone is also included in the box which allows for regular PA type use and you can sing-along with your iPod karaoke style.
I actually got mine at a local Bed Bath & Beyond store, same price but 20% off with the usual store coupon!
Pros:
+portable iPod/iPhone dock that runs for 8 hours on built-in battery!
+actually loud enough to be useful outdoors
+8 hour battery life!
+good but not great sound quality, it won't be confused for a Bose/JBL/etc. dock.
+8 hour battery life!
+comes with a microphone (icing on the cake)
+works with iPhone 3G
Cons:
-bulky/heavy...the battery life compromise
-no bass/treble adjustment, use iPod EQ to clean up sound output if you need to
-stated 12 hour full recharge time, just need to plan in advance for useage

Behringer EPA40 PA System Review

Behringer EPA40 PA System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought 4 Behringer EPA40 portable PA systems for my company because we were hosting a large open house tour with 4 chartered busses. Turns out modern motor coaches almost always have built-in PA systems, but the Behringers still proved useful for crowd management at frequent stops on our parade of homes.
This is a fairly specialized device. The only competition is athletic bull horns, with poor audio quality, and a very comparable portable PA unit from Fender, the guitar company most famous for Stratocaster guitars (Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton). Frankly, I would have preferred the Fender unit even at about twice the cost, but at 4 units, there was a $400 spread between Behringer and Fender.
I own larger portable AC-powered Fender PA equipment, too, and it is excellent.
These Behringer portable PAs are quite serviceable, but the design is odd, something like a quarter section of watermellon, and the color is weird, too, somewhere between blue and purple. Fender definitely wins for appearance and industrial design. The Behringers are made out of hard plastic, which might tend to shatter if dropped, though mine are lightly used and this is not a big consideration.
The microphones are decent for the intended purpose, but do not use standard CANNON 3-wire mic cables, but rather an unbalanced 1/4" plug. So the mics are dedicated to this device. The mic does contain a mute switch.
Run time is something like 6 or 8 hours, so these units could conceivably be used in classroom sized meetings or break-out sessions.
I don't have one of these devices in front of me right now, but I believe the speaker can be mounted on a standard mic stand, making for a self-contained battery powered mini PA.
The battery is an easily removable lead acid type, which can be replaced locally anywhere at an industrial battery supplier. Probably not a big consideration, but nice to know you can get generic parts locally anytime in the future. The battery is similar to those used in a computer UPS, only smaller and lighter, more suited to the handheld nature of this device.
The Behringer is easily handled by almost anyone, men, women and children. It includes a shoulder strap for walking and talking tours. There is space inside the battery compartment, which opens to the rear, to store the strap internally. Unfortunately, there is no internal storage for the mic, mic cable, or battery charger, which is external inline type, thankfully not a bulky wall wart.
Lack of internal storage along with odd shape means this device has a lot of parts to keep track of. I can't confirm specifics on this battery charger, but one plus I give Behringer is their external power supplies usually have the Behringer name molded into the power supply plastic, or clearly labeled as Behringer. Anymore, with millions of cordless phones, cordless drills, and all sorts of external power supplies, the first order of business for me when opening any manufacturer's box is making sure all the parts are clearly labeled, and if not, making labels with a Brother label machine before things get piled in a lost wire junk box.
In addition to the microphone, the Behringer EPA40 has an auxilary input using a standard 1/8" mono jack. This takes the same size wire used on most Windows PCs, normally color coded pastel green. This is also the same size as a small iPod-sized headphone/earbud jack. The only difference is this input is mono, and so a 2-wire mono Tip-Sleeve type plug should be used, not a stereo 3-wire Tip-Ring-Sleeve (TRS) type connector seen on every headphone and earbud plug on the planet.
What this means, and what my children will at some point discover, is that you can use 2 of these Behringer portable PA systems to create an awesome portable party. Just combine 2 Behringer EPA40 portable PAs (for stereo LEFT and RIGHT channels), 1 iPod, and a cheap splitter cable from Radio Shack, and you have hours of high volume, high quality, portable sound ready to go anywhere, no AC power required. It will beat any dedicated iPod boom box made.

Yamaha STAGEPAS 300 Portable PA System Review

Yamaha STAGEPAS 300 Portable PA System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first auditioned the Stagepas300 several months ago, along with a friend, and we judged it relative to other portable PA's in the ~$500 - $1000 list price range. He immediately bought one, I soon did the same. We are both acoustic solo players/singers (since the late 1950's) who occasionally work with one or more other musicians doing mostly folk, old time, early country and bluegrass, and ragtime and country blues repertoire. Think acoustic music in small to perhaps 1,200 sq ft sized venues and you'll have an idea where this PA is a very strong contender and good value to boot. Other applications, especially those employing larger ensembles, electric instruments, or high decibel levels in large spaces deserve beefier gear in order not to disappoint.
The build quality is very good for an inexpensive portable PA (much more so than the rivals I kicked around a bit). I use only microphones but the XLR, ¼", and RCA input jacks all feel good. Onboard phantom power would have been much appreciated and its lack is one of the weaknesses of the Stagepas300. Others have derided the reverb effect, but I use only the lightest amount for enhancing vocal ambience and have no complaints. I've also acquired the pole mounting hardware for the speakers and the adapter for mounting the mixer on a mike stand--they're a bit pricey, but, all-in-all, the whole thing still cost me only around $500 and it looks and sounds great. If your needs increase, this set up is extremely easy to upgrade/expand without becoming at all obsolete.
More than anything else, the Stagepas300 sounds very good. Yamaha makes good mass market audio gear and the 300 has solid, smooth output. The electronics have a 20Hz-20kHz frequency response with reasonable specs; the speakers are rated at 55Hz-20kHz and if you use good quality microphones and cables this is probably what you get in terms of audible response. It's quite good, very little audible distortion at moderate volume levels and little hum or other noise--a very smooth and natural sounding output. There are limited hi and lo EQ abilities on all the input channels, but I'm pretty much into the `straight wire with gain' philosophy anyway. Just to round out the set up FYI. Bob uses two Shure 87a microphones, I use two CAD C-195s and two Astatic CTM 1000A dual capsule cardioids condenser mikes (when playing in a duo) and I can't really tell much difference in the output.
We're both very happy with our Stagepas300's. If your expectations are reasonable and this review resembles you, chances are that you too will be very happy playing and singing through this system.

The STAGEPAS 300 was the first in the line of complete compact PA system offerings from Yamaha. It was designed to give quality minded musicians, performers, speakers and other presenters a solution for their smaller performances, without sacrificing high fidelity and professional appearance. The mixer of the STAGEPAS 300 also contains the two 150 watt digital power amplifiers, and it resides in the back of oneof the two passive loudspeakers that complete the system. The other loudspeaker has a convenient accessory compartment for the included speaker cables or other gear. This mixer has 8 total inputs. 4 are mono and can accept either microphone or line level instruments, and there are two stereo inputs to accept line level stereo sources like keyboards or CD players. Digital reverb is included onboard the mixer along with EQ or tone controls. In addition to providing simple operation, the mixer will operate installed in the speaker cabinet, out on a table or on a microphone stand with the optional adapter. Simple quarter turn fasteners allow easy removal and replacement with a coin.. The loudspeakers systems offer an 8" long travel woofer and 1" titanium high frequency driver assuring full fidelity sound. Due to their compact design, the loudspeakers require an external bracket to adapt for tripod stand use. The travel case accepts the speakers with these brackets attached. At less than 40 lbs, this system plays well beyond its size with remarkable fidelity.

The micorphone screw cracked the day i oppened it. This product will break easily on you and it's not even good for parties. This is probably the worst thing I ever bought.

Roland Cube Monitor / PA Review

Roland Cube Monitor / PA
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm frankly sick and tired of showing up for a gig and having my keyboard run through the P.A., thereby in essence causing me to forfeit all control of the instrument to the bandleader (or board op). Still, I've had to concede that the amps I've been using--a Roland KC150, then a KC350--had plenty of power and pop but no sonic attributes that would recommend them above the Bose P.A. set-up the band uses. Then, because I needed a small amp with an XLR connection for use as an emergency P.A., I picked up this relatively new item from Roland, which prominently describes itself as a "monitor" amp (i.e. meant only for the performer's ears).
Was I surprised when I got this thing home and put it through some rounds with a Kurzweil PC2 and SP2. It's little more than a compact brick, but it appears to have the power of my KC150 and, more importantly, in terms of "listenability" it sounds like its several heavens apart from the KC 150 or 350 (those ever-present Roland KC amps will make any piano, including Rolands, sound uninspiring if not boring during the course of a four-hour gig). This latest contender covers the entire piano range, effortlessly, smoothly, providing rich yet responsive bass where its needed and brilliant but not strident highs. Perhaps some would judge the sound a trifle "colored." If so, I'll take the coloration any day to the untempered sounds I've been getting from electric keyboards. The mid-range is tight and controlled, with the upper register "growing out" of it gradually but unmistakably. By contrast, the upper register on the heavy-duty KC amps strikes like a serpent, leaping out of the mix like home-brewed white lightning hitting the palate after it's just gotten accustomed to a vintage Bordeaux.
I even compared this little thing to my previous standard--the Roland Cube 60 that had preceded the KC150 (which has been around too long). This new one was smoother, bending to the bass notes like a gracious willow and springing to the top ones like fresh spring birch. In other words, even the Roland Cube sounded uneven and rough compared to this latest overachiever, which handled the tones of the scale like a single portamento, revealing no holes in any of the registers.
Playing any instrument or amplifier on the job can lead to a judgment radically different from the one made at home. If my instruments (I'm usually playing 2-3) have to be mixed through the P.A., fine. I won't have to listen to them. They'll be processed by this monitor, which will be facing and playing for me before it kicks out the stuff that the bandleader deems worthy of the public's ears.

Alesis TransActive Mobile (Black) Review

Alesis TransActive Mobile (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Alesis TransActive Mobile & ION Block Rocker virtually identical @ an excellent price:
In case you have done some research and also happened to stumble on the ION Block Rocker while contrasting with the Alesis TransActive Mobile, you need not do too much comparison if you have all information available for these two units before realizing that they are both built on virtually the same housing chassis and contain virtually all of the same internal electronics and feature capabilities. As a matter of fact, they are also built at the same manufacturing plant in Cumberland, RI. Whether or not ION is some sort of subsidiary of Alesis or shares some common denominators with them on a corporate level, or if, simply, some of their gear happens to be made at the same plant, I do not know, but I do have both of these units and can tell you that they are both excellent for their intended purposes, especially for the purchase price. The Alesis can be purchased at 200.00 including shipping, and the ION for 170.00, also including shipping...both through Amazon. Considering they are both pretty much the same unit, obviously the ION is a slightly better value.
Both have a very good sound on the high and midrange levels for a PA of their size, and a somewhat limited bass due to the diaphragm size of the conventional push-pull woofer driver. Both are easy to use from a standpoint of feature accessibilities, with gain controls and line and mic inputs all on the front panel, as well as a 1/4" instrument jack and separate volume controls for each input.
Minor differences: the Alesis has the on/off, power chord outlet, stereo quarter inch speaker output for accommodating a second passive speaker for stereo sound, IPod charge switch and battery level meters on a top rear panel while the ION has them on the right side. Aside from the color differences (Alesis is black while the ION is white), other minor differences are that the ION has recessed side handles while the Alesis has metal retracting handles which, given the weight of the unit, does feel like it is under some stress while lifting. The telescoping tote-handle and rubberized castors for rolling these units are both pretty much identical. Both are good features and well-manufactured in order to make transport on smooth surfaces more manageable.
The microphones and mic chords are also identical, and are good quality considering they are included accessories. One last difference is that the Alesis also includes a quarter inch to XLR audio chord in addition to the AC power and mic chords, while the ION just includes the power and mic chords.
Considering these units were priced out with an MSRP of 400.00 - 600.00 each, they are definitely worth every penny for a portable PA with power to size output, good sound, ease of use, and additional features, especially the IPod doc. I am speculating that after observing and utilizing both of these units first hand, the only reason the ION has a lower MSRP is that it was manufactured to be a more cost-effective line in comparison the well-known and long-established Alesis brand, even though it couldn't cost any less to manufacture the ION.

JBL MRX525 15-Inch Premium 350-Watt Two-Way Portable Loudspeaker Review

JBL MRX525 15-Inch Premium 350-Watt Two-Way Portable Loudspeaker
Average Reviews:

I have a live sound company. I have a small trailer and no employees. I cater to the local scene and have even worked shows with international touring bands. I need to have lightweight yet good sounding speakers. NO, these are not as nice as the JBL SRX series or some of the other pro cabinets BUT...Everybody loves how they sound. I have four of these cabs and mate them to EAW LA400 subs. Yes-I know people say you don't need a sub with these but yes, you do. I run a lot of metal and hardcore shows and subs are essential. Maybe for acoustic shows you can get away without subs..but I always have them.
I run my system in stereo and power these cabs with a Crown XTi 4000 amp. Each set gets an XTi amp. These speakers really like to be turned up. For a smaller room with less screaming metal needs you may want to go with the smaller MRX cabs. I also have a set of those.
Most reviews tell how great the speaker sounds, the highs, the tasty lows. Honestly, so much depends on the room and the way the PA is tuned. Great equipment sounds bad when set up improperly. My board is one of the following: Allen & Heath GL2400, Presonus Live,or a small Mackie. I also use a DriveRack for processing. With proper set-up these speakers will cut through the stage sound and push the vocals through the metal mayhem. I have also used them at acoustic shows and yes they do sound sweet. I could spend more money on SRX cabs and someday I might. But right now these cabs work great because they are not power-hungry and don't need monster 20-amp amplifiers or a three-way system. They are very light and easy to carry. Lastly, they sound great and people constantly compliment me on the sound. If you want to move up from more generic cabs..you won't be disappointed. DJ, metal, acoustic, trance, worship..I have done it all!

PYLE-PRO PWMA230 - 200W VHF Wireless Battery Powered PA System Review

PYLE-PRO PWMA230 - 200W VHF Wireless Battery Powered PA System

I was trying to decide between this 200watt system or one of the 25-35watt systems. I settled for this one and was impressed with the sound. I have a workshop to present in two weeks and wanted to amp the presentation with something louder than my voice. The test run so far was impressive. I was a bit surprised at how small the system was, but it packed some serious sound and quite versitle. I like it. Its worth the price and looks professional.
