Shure SM57 Microphone Review

Shure SM57 Microphone
Average Reviews:

Everyone has heard of this microphone... and anyone who has recorded has purchased one. It's a perfect microphone for instrument recording; however, I've heard notice of a new microphone that is giving it a run for its money! Check out the ES-57 model, it's about 1/3 the price! I'm actually ordering a 3 pack right now to check them out, will review when all set up!

The Shure SM57 is a fixture in the music business. You see it everywhere. In small clubs and 100,000 seat stadiums. This renowned mic is used by legendary performers and the latest up-and-comers.What you may not have seen are the thousands of SM57s at work behind the scenes in professional recording studios around the world. In fact, you'll probably find it in more studios than any other mic.Not surprising. The unidirectional dynamic SM57 has set the industry standard by defining the way instruments should sound. Which is why it's used by any serious musician or recording professional. Its warm, clean sound along with its carefully contoured presence rise make it ideal for a wide range of instrument miking applications, particularly guitar amplifiers and drums. The SM57 features a uniform cardioid pick-up pattern that isolates the main sound source and minimizes background noise.

Shure SM94 Instrument Microphone Review

Shure SM94 Instrument Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This mic is truthful. If you are a really good singer, this mic will make your voice sound professional; if you are not, then this mic will reveal your flaws. It has a flat frequency response and very low distortion, as well as very low handling noise. It must be used with the A3WS windscreen to prevent breath pops. Also, it should be held about four inches away.
I do not recommend this mic for rock or rap, as it works best at a distance, which would increase the chance of feedback. Other Shure mics such as the PG-58 are better for rock.
This mic runs on an AA battery, or phantom power. It is an ELECTRET condenser mic, which means it is not humidity sensitive like regular studio condenser mics.

Ideal for instrument miking needs of professional musicians and sound engineers in both live performance and sound recording, the Shure SM94 is equally at home in sound reinforcement systems or in sound studios and motion picture/ TV scoring stages. Its smooth, flat frequency response is free of either a presence peak or a low-frequency rolloff, making it a perfect choice for all types of musical instruments.
The SM94 can be powered by any phantom power source, or by an internal 1.5-volt AA battery. The battery, which serves as a backup power source in the event of phantom power failure, can provide up to 5,000 hours of continuous operation. When used with the optional wind-screen (available separately), the SM94 can be used by vocalists and speech-makers who desire a wide, flat response with minimum coloration.

We got this to replace our old unit in our church which became obsolete when the FCC changed their regs. The old unit was a Shure, but this is really an upgrade in quality. With the rebate it was worthwhile to get the better unit. It has better range and better sound quality than the old unit.

Shure Beta 57A Microphone Review

Shure Beta 57A Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Beta series is the step above the incredibly popular SM series by Shure. The 57s are typically used to mic instruments and the 58s mainly for vocals. It is a dynamic microphone, so it's rugged enough for any situation, but is built to a much higher standard than typical dynamics so you get a lot more range and detail than you might expect.
I have used the 57 for a wide variety of instruments and vocals with great success both live and in the studio.
The Beta57 is excellent on snare, acoustic guitar, electic guitar, horns and wind instruments in addition to being a great vocal microphone. The supercardioid pattern ensures much more flexibility on stage with less chance of feeding back.
Overly loud bands with demanding vocalists who need as much as you can give them in the monitors, this is a life saver. Snare top and bottom. High hats when I don't want the bleed that a condenser would give. This is my go to mic for live applications.

The Shure Beat 57A Dynamic Microphone is the hands-down best choice when you want one mic to do the work of many. Equally at home as an instrument or vocal mic, the Beta 57A features increased warmth and presence, giving your music more impact and clarity. Shure SM58LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone Review

Shure SM58LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first rule of microphones is that, "No one microphone is perfect for every purpose." Rule two is, "Experiment with different mics in different applications to find your signature sound." I've used Shure SM58's along with their ancestors and relatives back to 1968. I primarily used them for broadcasting and recording spoken word content but I have used (and still do use) them for singing some back up vocals. The SM58 does one thing well and that is vocal performance when used very close to the mouth for public address use. Some people, me included, actually sound better and more comfortable in a live performance setting when using another mic, the Shure SM-57. The SM-58 is a very good vocal mic and for some people probably the best choice. For example, anyone who can not resist putting the mic right up against their lips while singing will probably want the SM-58. People with softer or weaker voices will want the SM-58. The SM-58 is highly directional and has a noticable yet manageable proximity effect (which means the bass increases the closer you get.) This mic does not pick up well from much over 8 inches away. The reason so many singers think you are supposed to shove microphones practically inside your mouth is because the ball type Shure vocal mics require you to get them very close or they don't sound right. On the other hand, the SM-57 sounds best several inches away from the user's mouth and works fine up to 12 inches away. While the SM-58 is certainly the number one professional PA vocal mic, there are precious few other uses for it because it has a colored sound with a prominent frequency response boost in the upper midrange plus a sound source has to be very close before it is picked up clearly. It works ok for conga drums and the like, but the SM-58 is about the last thing you'd want to use to mic a sax or guitar. Personally these mics are not the best for my mic technique or the basic nature my voice, but for some people they sound great. The live vocal mic that works best for me is the Shure SM-57 with a windscreen. However for other people the SM-58 works better. It depends on your voice and what you want the mic to do. If you have a very deep voice, the SM-58 might be the second best choice after the SM-57 which has a better low frequency response. One certain advantage of the SM-58 is the excellent gain before feedback capability. This mic can be turned up louder than almost any other mic without that annoying PA squeal. Another advantage of the SM-58 is that it is still available (at a slight extra cost) with a built-in on/off switch. The SM-58's ball shaped grills are very sturdy and even if you should dent one you can get a replacement which screws right on for about ten dollars. I've seen SM-58's dented, rusty, dusty, smoked up, spit into, with pieces missing and slammed into a hardwood stage with the full weight of a boom stand adding mass to the fall and yet I've never seen but one stop working and that malfunction was due to an on/off switch that got dirt in it. All the pro-line Shure mics are top quality. The pro line Shures also hold their value well. If you buy one and decide you don't like it, you can get about what you paid for it on eBay. I would compare as many mics as possible before buying one. Senneheiser's EVOLUTION mics sound really good too and are worth a look. The SM-58 will be the number one on-stage vocal mic for the forseeable future because most people follow the crowd instead of actually trying out different mics and picking the one that works best for their particular voice. These things are so durable that even if they stopped making them today they'd still be around for another 20 years at least.

The Shure SM58 unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic vocal microphone is designed for professional vocal use in live performance, sound reinforcement, and studio recording. It has a legendary vocal response for singing or speech. Rugged construction, a proven shock-mount system, and a steel mesh grille ensure that even with rough handling, the SM58 will perform consistently, outdoors or indoors.

The Standard for Dynamic Vocal Mics You'll find multiple SM58s in most any studio or live music venue--no doubt you've heard of them. The SM58's frequency response is tailored for vocals, with brightened midrange and bass rolloff. The uniform cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source and minimizes background noise, which is ideal for vocals, especially in live situations where background noise is substantial.
The microphone's pneumatic shock-mount system cuts down handling noise, making it a great choice for handheld vocals, and the built-in wind/pop filter helps keep things in check.
The dark gray, enamel-painted, die-cast metal case has legendary looks and--paired with the mesh grille--legendary toughness.

Shure PGX24/SM58 Handheld Wireless System, H6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This microphone does the job!....great sound, easy to set up, and haven't had a single problem with it! I certainly don't get any "extra noises" from this microphone as I ever did with a wired microphone! It doesn't pick up every single "puhhhh," "sssssss," or "plunk" when touched or tapped. I'm very happy with it....Only thing though, I recommend getting rechargable batteries...as you'll need to have an extra pair or two if playing long shows as do I....usually 4 hours plus. Most batteries and brands last a good 4-7 hours....but sometimes it just seems that some brands don't last as long as the others...cheaper in the end to just buy the rechargable ones....it doesn't take long...and they last a good while!
Thanks Shure for making such a wonderful microphone!!! Will certainly stay with company forever!

Shure PGX24/BETA58 Handheld Wireless System, H6 Review

Shure PGX24/BETA58 Handheld Wireless System, H6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great value. High performance at a mid level price. Easy to set up (IF you read the instructions) and the auto frequency select is a great thing. Good sounding mic for spoken word or vocals. I especially like the fact that it uses 2 AA batteries instead of 9V batteries. Good battery life, good range of transmission and VERY expandable. (NOTE: IF you are adding a second one or adding one of these to a system that already has wireless mics, make sure that ALL your wireless devices are ON when you do the auto frequency select)
Also if possible use the balanced XLR out to avoid noise and for a better sound. I also like the power supply not using a 'wall wart' and putting the transformer in the middle of the power cable.
Con: It is possible to over tighten the battery cover and break it. Don't crank it on like Godzilla and it will be fine.

Audix I5 Dynamic Instrument Microphone Review

Audix I5 Dynamic Instrument Microphone

This mic is your standard dynamic instrument mic. There is nothing revolutionary about it, but I can say that it sounded better than the old reliable SM57 on snare drum. It sounded pretty good on a guitar cabinet, also - a bit better than the SM57 in that application also. It's $10 more expensive than the SM and I would say it's worth the extra change.

Studio Projects B1 v2 Condenser Microphone Review

Studio Projects B1 v2 Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm so happy with this mic. After going through two other condensers (an MXL990 and a Shure KSM27) which I got rid of, I'm finally content. The best thing is that the price is outstanding. This mic is priced far lower than what it should be.
The Studio Projects B1 has a wonderfully warm low end to it that still has detail. I have a midrange voice, and it fits me very well. The highs are not so overly "essy", as many other cheaper mics are. They are clear and just right. I barely feel a need to add much for EQ.
My previous experience with an MXL 990 was not a good one. I returned it in a day, due to the muddy lows and weird high end. I also had a Shure KSM27, which is probably better suited for high-pressure sound applications than VO's. I didn't care for its boxy highs sound, and sold that off.
The Studio Projects B1 is just incredible for the price. You can actually hear it if you do a web search on transom dot org mic shootout. It sounds better than mics costing thousands.
Really, an outstanding product. People say the C1 is better, but I just can't imagine myself needing it -- I'm so thrilled with this B1 for VO work.
The only con I'd say is the rather cheap basket holder. It comes with a free windscreen, though, which is a nice touch.
Remember, v2 of his mic has the extra -10 and -20 pad switch, as well as a two low-cut modes at -75, and I believe -150. Both work fairly well.
Get it!

Shure DMK5752 Drum Microphone Package Review

Shure DMK5752 Drum Microphone Package
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're doing live sound or a budget, or just starting to get into decent recording gear, this is definitely not a bad place to start. You can put an SM57 in front of just about anything and get a usable sound. A lot of people love them on snare's and guitar cabs, and get fantastic sounds from them. I'm sure you could get BETTER sound from other mics, but it's a very versatile mic, and is a great bang for your buck. It would never hurt to have 3 in your mic locker... especially if you're doing live sound. I haven't used mine live so I can't comment on the included rim mounts as I use stands in the studio, but they seem like they'd get the job done.
Given the choice, I'd probably prefer to own an AKG D112 over the Beta 52... but I couldn't pass up the price of this pack. I have both, and use them for different things, depending on the sound I want. I'm definitely not complaining about the Beta 52. I'm super happy with it, and it definitely has its place in the studio and venue. The Beta 52 is less expensive... especially if you buy it in this pack. So why limit yourself to one kick mic? Start with this pack, and if you feel like you need another mic down the road when you have extra cash, get a different one. The more the better. If your goal is to mic a drum kit on a budget, get these and a budget pair of small diaphragm condensers for overheads (MXL 603s perhaps), and you're set. If you know exactly what you want and don't mind spending a bit more, buy different mics. If you're on a budget (studio OR live), are just getting into the realm of decent gear and need a starting point, or happen to be searching for a few SM57's and a Beta 52, this is the package for you!

Three SM57s The industry standard for snare drum, and a reliable and high-performing choice for toms, the Shure cardioid dynamic SM57 microphone features a contoured frequency response that cuts through the mix with exceptional impact, while reproducing sound accurately.
One Beta 52A Perfect for the kick drum, the supercardioid Beta 52A derives its low-end punch and sonic presence from a carefully tailored frequency response. Equipped with its own pneumatic shock mount, the Beta 52A is designed with an integral locking stand mount for quick-and-easy set up.

AKG D112 Industry Standard Large-diaphragm dynamic microphone for Bass Instruments and Kick Drum Review

AKG D112 Industry Standard Large-diaphragm dynamic microphone for Bass Instruments and Kick Drum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The D112 is an industry standard for kick drum micing, and for a reason. Its EQ contour is perfectly tailored for kick drum in a way that is only rivaled by the D6. For use in front of the beater, aimed at the rim, or outside the drum, the results are consistently satisfying. This definitely delivers that signature rock kick sound. If you are looking for more natural kick sound, the RE20 is probably your best bet, and if you like a very clicky sound, the B52 shines in that area. But the D112 should be adequate in any circumstance, if not necessarily the first choice for every genre. If you are only going to own one kick drum mic, this should be it.

Click Here to see more reviews about: AKG D112 Industry Standard Large-diaphragm dynamic microphone for Bass Instruments and Kick Drum

The D112 has earned a well-deserved reputation worldwide as the best kick drum microphone ever made. Heavy-footed drummers won\'t faze it, because the D 112 handles up to 160 dB SPL with no audible distortion. A specially engineered diaphragm with a very low resonance frequency maintains solid and powerful response below 100 Hz, while a narrow band presence rise at 4 kHz punches through dense mixes with little or no added EQ. The result is a kick drum sound that ideally balances precise definition and forceful impact. The D 112 is also an excellent choice for use with bass cabinets, trombones, etc. Built in windscreen, SA 60 stand adapter included.

Shure SM48 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The SM48 has got to be the world's most underrated vocal mic. It has a nice presence to it, with a frequency response which is flattering to the human voice. The absence of an output transformer gives it a crispness which is lacking even from the venerable SM58. I've compared dozens and dozens of mics side by side, dynamic and condenser, and for the human voice the SM48 is one of my favorites.
The "LC" in the model number means "less cable", meaning it doesn't come with a cable.

Sennheiser e945 Supercardioid Dynamic Handheld Mic Review

Sennheiser e945 Supercardioid Dynamic Handheld Mic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been performing live for almost 20 years now, and unless we had pro sound happening during a show, I struggled, like so many other singers, to cut across the band. Not to mention the impossibility of even using all the dynamics in my voice because the low volume/range stuff just would disappear. I was mostly using Shure SM58, the old horse, and knew how to work it well. But as my chops grew over the years and I started to be pickier, I tried several handhelds before finally coming across this one. And WOW. All I can say is, in comparison to the SM58, it's like someone threw on the light switch while you never even knew you'd been in the dark. It has much more gain to start with, and does wonderful things to my voice across my (huge) range. Crystal clear lows, excellent highs, and just really, really comfortable to sing through. I would buy it again in a heart beat.

Shure Whitelabel DJ Turntable Cartridge Review

Average Reviews:

If you want the best sound quality, Ortofon is pretty much the way to go, but that's not to say the whitelabels are bad. They aren't by a long shot. Top of the line for probably the second best sounding cartridge manufacturer. But the big reason DJs grab these is their spectacular grip on a record. I've never seen one of these skip, ever. If you're a rough DJ or you like to scratch, get this. The downside to that is that it has been known to wear out vinyl faster than other cartridges, but if you read the instructions and weigh it down less (say 2.0 max) you should be fine. Top notch needle.

The Shure Whitelabel is designed for party and club DJs spinning everything from house and techno to trance, dance, and jungle. With a sleek and ergonomic design, the cartridge additionally delivers higher trackability, lower tone-arm resonance, and better skip resistance. It also includes an adjustable stylus overhang, reliable electrical contact, and improved stylus visibility. Whitelabel's sonic characteristics include solid drop bass, flat mids, and accented highs, all tailored for the club environment. Shure phono cartridges are micro-manufactured, electro-mechanical devices that tell an entire audio system what's happening along the half-mile groove that's cut into the typical analog disc. The quality of the information provided by the cartridge determines how faithfully any audio system will reproduce the recorded sound. Skip Resistance: high Output: high Record Wear: very low Sound Emphasis: solid drop bass with detailed mids and highs Features The Design: Industrial, ergonomic, and plays to the cartridge's technological benefits of headshell mounted cartridges. Forward-Mass Design: Center of gravity is displaced closer to the cantilever for optimal performance. Forward-mass produces higher trackability, lower tone-arm resonance, better skip resistance and requires lower tracking forces. Adjustable overhang (50mm - 54mm): Unique to Shure products, adjustable overhang retains the forward and backward adjustment of a standard-mount headshell, providing maximum flexible adjustment between S-arm and straight-arm turntables. Electrical Contact: Engineered for optimized compatibility with most professional turntables, a rubber tension gasket and rounded gold plated pins limit possible damage caused by over-tightening cartridge to the tone-arm. Stylus Visibility: DJs can see exactly where they drop the needle. AmericanMusical.com is an authorized dealer of
