Mini Cardioid Lavalier Microph Review

Mini Cardioid Lavalier Microph
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For me this was an upgrade from the cheap ATR lapel mic. I heard these mics when helping another guy with his setup. I was blown away at how clear the voice is. I put them on my agenda to purchase as soon as the funds became available. I recently used these at an airshow with WW2 planes in the background. A very loud background. They worked perfectly to isolate the subject and reject the planes. In fact, I prepared for that and recorded a second audio source so that I could blend in the perfect level of engine noise to the background. I didnt want it too quiet with only the subjects being heard. I needed to have the viewer feel they were at the airport.
These mics are outstanding. Its not really a drawback but it is extra time to hook everything up. And you will have to have a method of getting an xlr source into your video camera. However you get that done will be worth it. These mics are worth every penny. The next step is around 800 and is not necessary for the semi-pro.
I just cant over how rich these sound. They are not tinty at all and have great bass. They are just a great step up from the cheap lavs that everyone starts out with. Combined with an HD vid cam, my videos are now completely professional sounding and looking.

For years this condenser microphone has been one of the top choicesin the industry for lavalier microphones and can be found installed inmany of the top wireless lavalier systems as well. It also can serve as an acoustic guitar mic mounted in the sound hole. The cardioid pickup pattern ensures the best possible pickup directly in front of the microphone while minimizing external noise, thus resulting in minimal feedback. The microphone comes with a tie/collar clip and terminates to a power module with battery. In place of the battery, the microphone can also be powered by 48 volt phantom power. Audio Technica Pro Series Cardioid Condenser Lavalier/Instrument Microphone Review

Audio Technica Pro Series Cardioid Condenser Lavalier/Instrument Microphone
Average Reviews:

Make sure you're buying the one that includes the battery power pack. I have included an audio sample from the store, which I recorded with my Zoom H4. There was some loud music playing on the speakers, so it'll give you a good idea of how it might sound under such circumstances. The Pro70 battery pack was powering the mic (not Zoom H4's phantom power). I was impressed with the sound of this mic, and the overall quality. It doesn't have the dynamic range of the next model up in the series (the 831b, which I own) but when you switch on the low-cut of the 831b, it and the Pro-70 sound virtually identical. I like this mic, and feel it's a good value for someone looking for a professional XLR mic that has good sound. Again, I find I generall prefer to swich on the "low cut" switch with my 831b anyway, so there's little reason to spend more than this if you're, say, a podcaster or wedding video place looking for excellent audio quality and bang for the buck. By the way, if it sounds a bit overdriven, that's my fault -- not the mic. I had my levels too high.

Shure SM93 Lavalier Microphone Review

Just bought this for presentation recordings and hooked it up via audio mixer via USB to Laptop, sound is crisp after a few minutes of practice placing it on a jacket/shirt and really helps isolate your voice during instructional scenes. Phantom powered (total novice but read up and worked it out) so needs a mixer/power source for it to work. Great build qulaity, preamp is heavy and sturdy (clippable in back pocket)
Hope this helps enjoy!

The first photo is the correct Shure Microphone. The two follow up pictures submitted by a user are NOT the correct mic. The unit has a standard Shure Mini XLR plug, NOT the Locking stereo mini (1/8") plug displayed in picture two. It can be easily rewired to add a standard XLR or other connector plug. Also, the lavalier mic element is the one in the first picture, NOT the one in the third picture. Unit comes with lapel clip and two windscreens. It is an excellent value for the money.

Audio Technica PRO88W-R35 VHF Wireless Microphone System for Camcorder Use Review

Audio Technica PRO88W-R35 VHF Wireless Microphone System for Camcorder Use
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first wireless mic. After some research I decided to go with this mostly due to it's price. To my surprise, not only the craftsmenship on this was great, but the sound is excellent too. I mostly do interviews and close range dialog shoots. It's great for the occasion.
You might need to play around with the antennas to get the sound clear but once it's done there's no prob. Can't say much on it's long distance performance but for my use it's great.
You can plug in any kind of mic with a mini plug on the transimitter. This way you can turn any mic into a wireless mic.
There are two outputs on the reciever. One for mic output to be used for connecting to your mixer, camera etc. And an additional output for monitoring sound through a headphone (small earpice headphone comes with the kit) or to be used as a line level output for non powered devices.
If you need more range and have high possibility of interference go for a UHF mic. But for regular interviews and on site shooting this is up to the job.

We purchased one of these devices to use for our church for audio recordings. While it picks up very well, there is a lot of noise that comes along with it. We tried new batteries, different rooms, balanced/unbalanced cables, different output devices -- it didn't matter, the buzzing around the speakers voice was always present and difficult to remove afterwards. The unit works well, and if you're not recording it would probably be fine (nobody could tell on the audio system). It just didn't work, though, for audio recording.

We used this mic to pick up very low dB sounds in therapy rooms. This thing can pick up the slightest whisper from all the way across the room, it's that sensitive -- really amazing. And we have the mics hanging from the ceiling so they aren't anywhere near the source.

Shure PGX14/93 Lavalier Wireless System, J6 Review

Shure PGX14/93 Lavalier Wireless System, J6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this at a local Guitar Center in Pasadena, CA. the label sign said $648 and they realized it was mispriced. In stores it's actually $399.99 and he gave me 10% off because I really wanted the lower model PG14 which they don't carry in stores.
At our church, we rent out a school auditorium where there's no sound padding. We currently have a Shure wireless handheld (looks like a Pg14 + handheld but I think it's some older model) and a Sennheiser wireless lapel system that's been giving us a lot of interference/feedback.
First I tried the new AKG wireless presenter set and it had a lot of pops and feedback even though we adjusted the squelch and other areas.
So we tried this PGX14/WL93 system and this past Sunday there was no feedback, pops, in interference. We only experienced the clean and clear interference-free sound that comes from Shure.
On the base unit, I mounted it on top of our other Shure (which was set to channel) 1 and pressed channel and it seems like channel 9 was the only available option (7, 8, 9 at first, but now just 9). I think this is fine as we won't be adding more wireless systems, as of yet.
Once we popped in the 2 AA batteries into the transmitter unit I brought the unit over to the wireless base and hit "auto-sync". I wasn't sure if it was 1 tap or hold so I held it and it synced. After that, everything worked beautifully.
I appreciated that the body transmitter was easy to use. Hold the top button for power (green), push once for mute (orange), and again for unmute (green). On the side there's a gain switch for mic (high), 0 (medium), -10db (low). the "0" level was the best because mic was too loud and pitchy.
The lavaliere mic was great. I originally thought it would pick up too many other ambient sounds since it's a condenser mic but even with the band playing in the back the speaker was the only voice captured in the mic. there were no pops from "p" sounds and it did not have ruffling sounds on the shirt/jacket (I did not put on the wind screen which is quite big and odd looking). All we received was clear sound.
The other good thing about this model (transmitter) is that you can use 3 different lavaliere mics: WL93 (which it came with), the higher end WL185, or the lower end PG185 which comes with the PG14/PG185.
WL93: $80, WL185: $100. PG185:$40.
Having loved the countryman, I am now completely fine with the above options. Countrymans break and cost $400+ just to replace the mic (yes just the mic!). I don't know how the lower end PG185 is, but I assume it's Shure clear. So for $40-$100 to replace a lavaliere mic, I would gladly choose this over and over again! And Shure will be the brand of choice over and over again.

Lapel Microphone Review

Lapel Microphone
Average Reviews:

The AT831cW Lavalier Microphone is small, solid and sounds fine. The problem is the cable. The cable is too fragile, it breaks easily and needs to be replaced every couple of years, or sooner. The fun part of it is that you cannot purchase the cable alone - without the microphone on it (although the mic can be unscrewed) - and so, it's a $75 a pop expense.
The transmitters are very poorly designed.
Overall: AVOID.

The AT831CW is terminated with locking 4-pin connector for AT UniPak bodypack wireless transmitters. Featuring a miniature condenser microphone with a cardioid polar pattern, the AT831CW is designed for hands-free applications in sound reinforcement systems and for use by professional musicians. The AT831CW provides improved gain before feedback that normally cannot be achieved with miniature omnidirectional microphones. Close-up voice pickup is crisp and clean, yet full sounding, while suppression of background noise is significantly improved over that of stand-mounted full-size cardioid microphones. Audio-Technica design engineers have utilized the newest low-mass technology in the quest for superior performance. Features Clip-on lavalier condenser cardioid microphone Provides crisp, full-sounding voice Excellent gain before feedback and suppression of background noise The microphone can be attached to clothing using the clip provided. This product didn't have a lot of reviews other than a couple and one video on Ebay, so I purchased it for my DJ Business, I must say this did not work as expected, many drop outs at two different events during the Ceremony, fully charged batteries energizers and away from anything that could have caused interference. Can't say how it works. It was recommended by a local store to go along with Audio-Technica's PRO 88W VHF wireless microphone systems that are designed for use with a camcorder. However, upon receiving both items, I discovered the headset has a 4-pin connection, and the wireless set accepts 3.5mm pin. The descriptions clearly state this. I just didn't read it, since I was going on 'professional' advice. My bad. I will say, the headset does seem to be well made, for the price. It's probably a great buy if it has the right connection for your system.
That being said, American Musical Supply, who the headset was ordered from, was exceptional fast in responding to my request for a RA# to return the headset. Credit was promptly applied to my account. I will shop with them in the future!
