Line 6 Uber Metal Review

(More customer reviews)This is the only Line6 product I have ever purchased and probably ever will. I have never been impressed by Line6 pedals or amps or anything else they make. This distortion pedal, however, is the best of all the distortion pedals I've tested. (DOD death metal, digitech metal master, metal muff w/top boost, boss metal zone, ibanez sm7, digitech gnx/rp series, boss gt 6, line6 podxt live)
Six knobs may seem like it's overdone, but they all have an important part. Three-band eq, scoop on the mid range (you can get SICK tones) gain setting and level. It also has a switch with three different distortion tones. The metal is more of an 80's hair/glam metal sound, it's pretty thin and flat, sounds about like Sonata Arctica.
The pulverize setting is what I mainly use. It's your standard heavy thrash sound, like dragging a concrete block across broken glass. This is where you get your Metallica, Lamb of God, Rammstein, Megadeth, etc. You know, whatever is heavy and sounds like bones breaking.
The insane tone is similar except it takes all the extra high end that's not really adding anything to the sound and sticks it on the bottom. It's extra thick and warm and heavy. I use it for some things but with my setup (ibanez rg1550 prestige w/emg's all around through an old twin triode crate with celestions) it's got too much low end boom to shred. It's fine just for slower Bloody Kisses style elegy type music but not so much Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir thrash.
The general tone is not so much a Line6 tone, it's the tone of your guitar being distorted and then sent through your amp. If you like the tone of your guitar and the tone of your amp you should be fine because the pedal does not override either of them, it just adds on.
Another feature that is very nice is the built-in noise gate. You can turn it off and get all that raw hiss static or you can put it on setting one which takes about half of the extra noise out and quiets it down and the second setting which effectively eliminates all unwanted noise and makes it a little tighter and slightly compressed. Turning the gate all the way on does take off sustain and makes harmonics not as audible, but how long do you need to sustain 8th and 16th notes?
As far as the construction goes, it's solid. It probably weighs about three pounds. I've had mine for a couple years now and I have never had any trouble with the jacks, the switches, or the foot switch. The knobs are a little on the delicate side, they sometimes are a bit loose and wiggly but they haven't broken off or stopped functioning in any way. The battery compartment is under the switch as normal but it's not so bad, you just gotta pinch in the circle deals on either side to get it open. I've got a PSU so I never need to go in there anyway.
I have yet to find a pedal that sounds as good or better (or an amp with on-board distortion for that matter) than this one. There are more out there I haven't tried, I'd really like to try some of the tube distortions and others I've heard of -- Rocktron Metal Planet, Guyatone MM-X Metal Monster, Nady TD-1 Tube Distortion, BBE Crusher High Gain Distortion Pedal, Rocktron Silver Dragon Tube Distortion Pedal, Pigtronix OFO Disnortion -- to see if they've got more of what I want like the Line6 does (or better).

(More customer reviews)I've been using the hot rod for the last few months for guitar lines needing less distortion than what i have my amp (or danelectro fab tone) set to. The product's description that the contour knob will give different tones is true, but to me they all sound like theyre being played through various sorts of tin cans, pipes, etc. I personally quite like these sounds but I am not sure how many others will. Like the other digitech pedals I own, this thing is very well built and easy to use.

Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp Review

(More customer reviews)After reading about this gadget from a number of reliable sources, I went ahead and gambled the 40 ducats on it and couldn't be happier. The first time I popped this little doohicky into my Ibanez RG, plugged in the phones, maxed the gain and slowly raised the volume I was nearly slammed into the wall by forcefield of metal madness. I attacked the Phrygian scale then glided into my favorite riffs. Power chords: BANG! Who knew you could get such big amp sound out of this tiny plastic box?
Substitute a plain old minijack cable between the phones jack and anything with speakers and you have an improvised amp with sound as big as the remote speakers allow.
It also has a minijack auxiliary input so you can jam along to your iPod or PC output in virtually total silence. No more annoying neighbors banging on your walls when you get the urge to shred at 2:00 a.m.
It would be nice if there was some reverb on the device, but metal holds up well with big gain so I'm not complaining. The device also has a tendency to swing around while you play -- if you are a highly mobile shredder this might annoy you (but can easily be fixed with a bit of gaffers tape).
If you're on a budget or just want to jam loudly in peace, you could do much worse than this. Throw one in a gig bag with a set of decent phones (and an iPod if you want) and you may as well be carrying a pocket sized amp with you. Note also that this was designed for METAL -- it's all about the gain. If you are looking for something bluesy or some other wimpy sound, consider the other amPlugs.

DigiTech XMM Metal Master-Distortion Guitar Pedal Review

(More customer reviews)In short, this pedal's does exactly what you should hope it does, given the name. It produces high-quality heavy metal distortion tones.
As I progressed as a guitarist, I kind of skipped from the very low end of guitar effects to the high end (a Line 6 Guitarport/Toneport kept me busy in between) and missed the middle. I only came back and grabbed this pedal because it was the most appealing DigiTech pedal I could get in a buy 2 get 1 free rebate offered by the company. If I could go back, I would definitely buy this pedal earlier in my career.
One thing should be made clear, this pedal has no distortion level (misnamed "gain" on some pedals) knob. Your only option is to stick with the gain it happens to provide. You are stuck with a gain (as in actual distortion-free volume electrical signal increase), low eq., high eq., and "morph" knobs.
From the manual:
[The morph knob] morphs between the three different metal distortion voicings...
"smooth high gain tone" -> "scooped midrange sound" -> punchy mid range heavy metal sound that really cuts through the mix."
This pedal is focused in the realm of Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, etc. You may not be able to go all the way to Panteraland with it unless you have some hot pickups and do some amp tweaking, but you can get some pretty brutal sound (at least Testament level) all the same. I find that I can pretty much spin the knobs randomly and get a nice sound. I have tube-based equipment and nicer modeling pedals that are more tweakable and can deliver better tones, but this one is just perfect if you want some excellent sound with minimal effort. It will likely become my main distortion pedal except for when I need something really special.
I've played using this pedal with Seymour Duncan JB and Air Norton pickups and Lace Drop & Gain neck and bridge pickups as well as a Lace Hot Gold single-coil bridge pickup. It sounded excellent on all of them played through a Peavey solid-state half stack. I also have JamMan, Expression Factory, and Synth-Wah pedals from DigiTech, and they've all treated me extremely well. (Yes, I know you can get the Expression Factory to get a lot of the Metal Master's distortion tones, but I prefer to just stick with it's expression sounds and leave the distortion to designated pedals.)
I do really wish they'd include the DigiTech PS200R power supply with these things, though. It's a pain to keep having to deal with batteries or add to my already convoluted power supply scheme.

Dean V Dave Mustaine Guitar, Bolt-on Classic Black Review

(More customer reviews)I used to play guitar years ago. I had never gotten truly proficient, but I knew a number of songs and wasn't bad at playing them. The problem was, I never really felt like I could play the stuff I listened to - Metallica, Megadeth, etc. Now, after about 8 or 9 years of not having a guitar (pawned off all of the guitars I had over the years, in needing to pay bills - never again!), I decided to pick up a guitar - one that would inspire me to learn some of my favorite songs ("The Thing That Should Not Be" and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", for example.)
While I didn't buy this guitar from Amazon (I want to be able to hold and play an instrument before buying it), I'm quite happy that I did buy it. It may be the "low end" of the Dave Mustaine signature series but, as far as I can tell, there's nothing lacking other than a few frills like upgraded inlays and custom paint jobs.
I've had my guitar for about a week now and I can't put it down. I've yet to find anything wrong with it or anything to complain about, save for the positioning of the strap buttons - one is right behind the neck, where it bolts on to the body, and the other is on the underside of the "top" leg of the V. A little difficult to get used to if you're used to strat-styles, but still pretty comfortable. I don't know if I'll ever be able to truly shred out some of the solos in some of the songs I want to learn, but I do know that I'll enjoy trying while playing this guitar. :D
