M-Audio EX-P Expression Pedal Review

M-Audio EX-P Expression Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this pedal along with an Axiom 61 keyboard. The Axiom had to go back to M-Audio within a couple of weeks because certain keys were putting out full velocity at all times.
The pedal lasted a little longer, but eventually failed - during a gig. I opened it to see if a repair was possible. The pedal is generally well designed for a product at this price point, with one major weakness: The linkage between the treadle and potentiometer is made of flimsy plastic that is destined to fail under even the most optimistic conditions.
This is planned obsolescence of the worst sort. Because my pedal was (just) out of warranty, and M-Audio doesn't stock parts for it, I was told that "it would be most cost-effective for you to just buy another pedal". Ha....fat chance, lesson learned. Bought a Boss FV500L, never looked back. The Boss will probably outlive me.

Digidesign Eleven LE Plug-In Review

Digidesign Eleven LE Plug-In
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Guitar players care about 1 thing, tone. I have a collection of guitars and amplifiers in my room I pretty much have a wall of speakers. I have all kinds of microphones to mic them with and record them using pro tools. Micing an amp can be sometimes just a pain to get the microphone in that sweet spot not to mention the cost of the amps and microphones. I have used amp modelers before and some you can get decent sounds out of but this plugin is one of my favorites. An Ilok is required which isn't as big of an issue now that PT 9 requires it as well. I will say Digidesign takes there time making plugins and they do it right. This plug in doesn't kill your computer and faithfully creates sounds of the amps they modeled. Overall I was more than impressed with what this plugin can do and the tone that it produces is remarkable. I would recommend demoing it first, I did and I bought the asset a week later.

"Most guitarists are willing to invest thousands of dollars in search of a guitar amp that will unleash the perfect tone. For many, it means having to own several amps that all have a uniquely different voice and purpose. On top of that, guitarists are faced with another set of challenges when trying to capture that tone in recordings, or reproduce it in a live setting. Eleven LE is here to help alleviate that problem. Digidesign Eleven LE is a powerful RTAS/AudioSuite plug-in for recording guitar amp sounds that allows you to achieve highly realistic, jaw-dropping guitar tones based on some of the worlds most coveted vintage and modern tube amps, speaker cabinets, and mics all right in your Pro Tools or Avid rig. It also includes cab models ranging from the sounds of a 59 Fender Bassman with Jensen P10Qs to an 06 Marshall 1960AV 4x12"" with Celestion Vintage 30s. The mics include dynamics, condensers, and a ribbon style model based on popular designs by trusted names like Shure, Sennheiser, Neumann, AKG, and Royer.Using an innovative amp modeling technique Eleven LEs designers captured these amps, cabs, and mics at their best in a world-class studio. Presets allow you allows you to achieve the multi-dimensional guitar tone nuances of vintage amp like power amp sag, ghost notes, cab resonances, speaker cone breakup. This is an awesome preamp! great tone, my guitar snarls and squeals like never before. Does it feel like a tube amp? not quite but its close in terms of response to playing dynamics. Missing some of the harmonic nuances of tube tone decay*... but hey, if you have $$ to drop on a triaxis or a real amp (which you probably couldn't use in an apartment), you shouldn't be looking here anyway. Note: the little handles on the side are black, not silver as shown in the picture.

Boss FS-5L Latching Footswitch Review

Boss FS-5L Latching Footswitch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use the FS-5L with my AC-60 and previously used it with my BC-60 Bluescube. The red LED light is great for channel switching and it only takes a single AA battery to power it. The battery lasts a long time. The pedal is designed to interlock with your other FS series pedals. The downside to this switch is the price and the sharp aluminum corners. If you put this in your gig bag it will be torn to shreds. The plastic pedal itself can be slippery and is a relatively small surface.

Crate Single Button Metal Crate Footswitch Review

Crate Single Button Metal Crate Footswitch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This simple footswitch does the job of switching amp channels on my Crate GX series combo. It comes with a single phono cable with molded ends for connecting the footswitch to your amplifier. It's sturdy and has a single red LED light to indicate channel visually.
Though my amplifier was actually made to work with a two button footswitch, this single button switch works for channel switching via a stereo cable instead of the included mono phono cable. It works just as it is supposed to work.

Simply put, it let me down. My first gig, the right button (boost) isn't functional. The switch is obviously bad.
It sits here, worthless, and I don't have the time right now to return it. A total waste of time and money.
It gets ZERO stars ... I only put one star on because the review process wouldn't allow me to submit it.

Line 6 Floorboard - Guitar Pedal Board Foot Contr Review

Line 6 Floorboard - Guitar Pedal Board Foot Contr
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use the Floorboard with the Pod Pro, though it is also designed to work with Line 6's Flextone series of amplifiers too. It's really easy to use, although you can either have it in "select the patches" mode, or "manual mode" though you need to be en garde at all times, as the same buttons do different things in the different modes. It has some great - amazing, really - flexibility in the manual edit mode, and brilliantly clever little touches like "boost" functions for EQ, overdrive and distortion. You want to hit that solo? Step on it, and it goes a little louder, a little brighter, or a little nastier depending on what you step on.
However, unless you trained as an organist, in a live session you don't want to be jumping around like Michael Flatley jabbing your toes at various buttons in the manual edit mode, clicking delays in or out, and then switching modes (another button) when you want to change patches - realistically you will just have a patch *with* delay set up next to an identical patch *without* delay. But if you're in patch mode, you don't have access to the boosters - which really would be useful. But it's such a great thing I think, dammit, I'll just get comfortable training to be an organist.
Its construction is as hard as nails, but - and it's a big but - the patch switches kick in a split second after you stamp on them, not immediately, as you'd expect with a stomp box. This is a major weakness. Since I use it with the Pod, and only really in the home studio environment, I can live with this. But I don't think it would fly in a live envinronment. When you want to switch from Fender Tweed to loud JCM for that face melting solo, you want to do it *now* and not some time between now and the next beat. I don't know if this can be fixed in future models, but it needs to be.

Line 6 FBV2 2 Button Foot Switch Review

Line 6 FBV2 2 Button Foot Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a Line 6 Spider III 120W 2x10 amp (which I love). For changes between presets during songs, I needed some sort of footswitch. The options are this ($29), a FBV Express ($99), a FBV Shortboard ($269) or a FBV Longboard (I think it's $349 or something). The disadvantages of this one are:
(a) it only switches between 4 presets at a time rather than 36 and
(b) there are only two buttons so getting from preset 1A to 1C requires two clicks.
However, this is not a problem if you set your presets in order of how they appear in a song and make sure that each song has 4 or less presets. I have never played a song in which this was an issue.
The advantages are, of course, low price AND having a compact, reasonable pedal rather than an unwieldy giant that you don't need. In addition, this thing is sturdy and I don't think it will ever break down.
So, if I had to do it again, I definitely would. I like this amp 100% better now that I can change between presets during songs. If I didn't have access to some sort of footswitch that could do this, I'd sell the amp. That's how important this little thing is.

Rocktron Gainiac 2 Tube Guitar/Bass Preamp Review

Rocktron Gainiac 2 Tube Guitar/Bass Preamp
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the money, this a very decent preamp. I really have to review it with 4 stars, although I feel for the the average musician it would be a 3. First lets get to the pros:
Its rugged, small, and compact. I bought 2, one was a backup I never used. They stood up to the wear and tear of touring. The Gainiac II has a VERY awesome clean tone, the classic warm tube sound. I actually know a lot of bands that have used this preamp to record clean tones. Its wonderful and really can't be beat IMO. The distortion channel is also very good. A nice clear sound, not the static fuzz that extreme distortion causes. Great for hard rock/80s (I used to cover some Van Halen songs that it was perfect for). I wouldn't say its going to give you a death metal tone without pedal assitance, but if you want a clear responsive distortion, this is it. I saw a lot of complaints on Musician Friend's website that the Gainiac lacks a thickness and tone, but I honestly cannot hear it. I used DiMarzio Evolution pickups and the Apex Aural Exciter in front and powered it with an ART Sla-1 power amp so perhaps that is why I never heard this lack of tone.
Ok the cons:
The tube is very hard to get out. Don't get me wrong, its an awesome tube but there is always room for improvement. The Gainiac II is noisy on the overdrive channel. This can be solved fairly easily with the power amp and a good noise gate. I used the noise gate on my processor and it fixed everything right up, but some may not be as fortunate to have a good gate. There is only one output on this unit, which I got by fine with. There are no effects, just a clean and overdrive channel, which was ok for what I was doing. Also, there is no on/off switch and the AC adapter is fairly large. Recording directly into a computer gave kind of a rough tone but I'm not a recording expert.
My verdict is if you're looking for a preamp/power amp guitar rig, give this little unit a try. Its hard to fine the good Line 6 preamp that used to sell for $500, and the only other preamp I would ever consider is the Prophecy (which will break bank). You will have to do some tweaking, but for the money I think the Gainiac deserves a little attention and some surprising tones can be achieved. Also, for the price, you can afford to decide if the pre/power setup will be right for you. If this isn't something that you want to keep on a live rig, it will always be there for tracking down cleans in studio.

Line 6 EX-1 Review

Line 6 EX-1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My first Line 6 products were the Flextone II Plus amplifier and FloorBoard foot switch. There were only four things I felt the absence of from that set-up, phaser, stereo/ping-pong delay, pitch shifter and onboard, dedicated compressor. I resolved that I'd someday get another Line 6 unit that would include those features, and the POD XT Live was it. But, it was still incomplete with only one expression pedal to control volume, effects, amplitude, reverb, etc.
The EX-1 is so simple. If you don't alter the programming in the POD XT, the EX just functions as a volume pedal by default, leaving the onboard expression pedal to work as a wah wah pedal. But, I'm using the EX on several presets to control Leslie speed, synth waveform and filter cutoff. I hope to utilize its other capabilities down the line. Something I recommend to anybody with a POD XT/XT Live, or one of Line 6' foot pedal emulators.

Line 6 FBV Express MkII 4-button Foot Controller Review

Line 6 FBV Express MkII 4-button Foot Controller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Line 6 FBV Express MkII Foot Controller works great with my Line 6 Spider amp. I never fully utilized all of the features of the amplifier until I got the foot controller. Having to reach down and change settings on the amp by hand is awkward and interrupts the music. The foot controlled access to four pre-sets, the tuner, and volume is fantastic. I really like the wah pedal as well.
The only difficulty I had was updating the firmware (Flash Memory). The calibration procedure suggested in the manual wasn't available until the firmware was updated. When I plugged the foot controller into my computer (Windows 7 64-bit OS) to update the firmware, Windows 7 wouldn't install the necessary USB driver automatically and there was no way to manually install a driver. I'm not sure if this is a Windows 7 compatibility problem or if there's something unusual about my particular computer. I got around the USB driver problem by using XP mode (available in Windows 7 Professional).
In XP mode the USB driver installed automatically and the Line 6 Monkey update utility worked as advertized.
Once the newer firmware was installed the calibration procedure went smoothly. Honestly, the FBV MKII foot controller seemed to work well right out of the box without calibration and I'm not sure if updating the firmware and calibrating it was absolutely necessary.
Since getting the FBV Express MkII I can't imagine playing without it.

Digidesign Eleven Rack Guitar Multi Effects Processor Review

Digidesign Eleven Rack Guitar Multi Effects Processor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To qualify this review, I must first inform you:
I have no affiliation with Pro Tools or Avid, so if I say something positive you can trust it.
As a professional studio musician ( since the 1970's) I have had experience using every original amp and effect this ( or any other) modeling preamp claims to emulate. If you ever listened to the radio in the 80's and 90's, you have heard me playing most of these real amps on real records. There's a good chance you might have seen me on TV with some of these amps too.
Good features: KNOBS
The front panel has large rotary encoders with smooth-operating silent knobs. That's great, because they lay these out to provide tone and volume adjustments in real time... "On-the-fly" as they say. This feature is not new or unique, but it demonstrates that they consulted with real players during the design. This means you can use it like the front panel of whatever amp you are modeling and that the controls operate very much like the real thing. A+ !
TONE: very good for a modeling amp... one of the best. Because I have owned and toured with all the famous amps, I know not only how they sound, but how they react to different guitars / pickups... how they "Feel" to the player. "Feel" is a subjective term because it includes so many variables. One of the most important variables that most reviewers forget is VOLUME. It is impossible to describe the experience of playing to 17,000 people at full volume on a large stage. The whole point of using modeling amps is to recreate all the nuances of of tone and response that a REAL amp has at REAL stage volumes, yet do that at low volumes for smaller gigs, sessions or home recording. In that area, this is one of the best sounding and feeling preamps I have used.
Versatility:
It is designed to work either as a recording front-end, a direct out to a mixer / PA... AND a front end to any professional amp you currently have. I'll explain all three of those briefly:
If you already have a good amp, (or two for stereo) you hook this up for live playing easily. Three button presses get you to the cab-sim defeat function, so you can turn OFF the internal cabinet simulation. That is also not new or unique, (Much less expensive modelers have that) but it is absolutely necessary for any professional with a REAL amp. You don't want the artificial simulations in addition to the natural variables of your amp and speakers. Once you learn how to navigate this machine, it only takes a few seconds to set that function ON or OFF. So, that's a A grade in this sub-category, but not A+. Why? Because they should have made it possible with a single press of a dedicated button.
Interface with a live PA or mixer to power-amp: Many working guitarists love the sound of their real amps, but have discovered that for amplifying modeled sounds, nothing beats a professional power amp. I won't discuss the relative merits between Class A, AB, or class-D topologies here. The bottom line is you get more clean raw power in a smaller, lighter package with professional power amps. They do not "color" the sound as much, which is desirable when you have a modeling preamp. Also, professional solid state power amps are far more reliable and require far less maintenance.
This thing works perfect well with either powered speakers or your own power-amp / passive speaker combo. (my preferred rig). Not only that, but you can operate it in two modes at once. That is: you can use a real amp for your stage-monitors and simultaneously run a direct out to the FOH mixer. That makes a sound-tech's job easier. That's especially important if YOU are the sound-tech. I just wish they used dedicated outs for each "mode" and had balanced lines for everything. This has balanced-outs for the direct out and buffered un-balanced outs for everything else. You'd think for the price their asking, they could include two-extra balancing transformers!
Recording and re-amping. Many hobbyists and home recording studio owners will want this because it excels here; especially if you already use any version of pro-tools on a MAC. If you use any other recording software environment it still works, and you can still use its internal processing to relieve your computer form all the heavy number-crunching. That's great. This also allows you to "re-amp." That is when you devote a separate track to recording a dry, unprocessed guitar signal. That way you are not "locked-in" to a preamp sound during mix-down. You can choose a different amp-model, effects, EQ... anything, AFTER the recording is done. This feature is of no use to me, however tweaky amateurs love to play with tones without having to perform. Producer-types like to stamp their talentless imprimatur on other people's labor. So this feature is a big hit among inexperienced geeks and pretentious producers too. This category therefore deserves a special two-pole rating: for Tweaky geeks who can't play and have endless time to play with toys, or for egotistical yet talentless engineering nerds, this is an A+ feature. For any professional with decades of hard-won experience the rating is "who cares?" Well, sorry... I take some of that back. I suppose an up-and-coming studio cat MIGHT get more calls if the producers knows he can screw with the player's tones AFTER the session. Producers universally enjoy wrecking decent tracks with their imbecilic post-prod voodoo. This thing allows them to do that in spades!
EASE of operation: Manufacturers are stupid. They want to create a hot product, but they forget they must sell to musicians, not computer geeks. True, some of us are actual engineers who can operate computers, graphing calculators, know math and how to use slide rules. ( I'm giving away my age here.) But as musicians, we do not enjoy tweaking when we are playing. We need the instantaneous adjustments of real knobs and dedicated buttons. So why do so many manufacturers, including this one, make the same mistake? Because they are cheap and stupid. They are so worried about making profit that they refuse to put simple buttons with clear labels like; Chorus, reverb, delay, boost, distortion, overdrive, leslie, etc.. Instead, they group effects under "categories" based on the type of processing algorithm that makes that effects. Reverbs are different than delays. Those are different from other time-based modulating effects like chorus or flanging. They are basically just putting their software into a metal box so that it LOOKS like a real machine.
OK... so I have exposed my prejudice here... I despise software driven commands, menus and scrolling. I prefer dedicated buttons for every function. Also, I know enough about engineering and product design that I see why they are ripping us off. They claim to give maximum flexibility, and they do, sort of. But it is at the expense of intuitive control.
NOTE TO ALL MODELING preamp DESIGNERS:
WE NEED BUTTONS. ANY PRODUCT YOU MAKE SHOULD BE SO SIMPLE THAT IT REQUIRES NO MANUAL.
Finally, the few amp models and effects this thing has are very good. Not the best for every guitarist or situation though, but certainly one of the best. The original GP100 by Roland is still as great today as it was before it was discontinued. Mine still works and sounds as good as this for the BIG THREE models: Marshalls, Twins and AC30's. In fact the GP100 is BETTER than this much newer device at the Marshall plexi tone. For that matter, the sansamp GT2 ($160) does that single thing as well as any preamp on the market. The ROCKTRON PROPHESY got the "buttons plus knobs" thing right. Why can't AVID?
EVEN CHEAP modelers (

Line 6 FBV Shortboard MkII Foot Controller Review

Line 6 FBV Shortboard MkII Foot Controller
Average Reviews:

This review is specific to the FBV Shortboard with a Line 6 Spider IV amp.
I bought my Line6 Spider IV 75 (1x12) amp about 6 months ago and just recently bought the FBV Shortboard as I'm playing in a band again. I was fairly underwhelmed with the amp before acquiring the shortboard. Now, it seems like a seriously worthwhile amp that I can gig with.
A bit of background on me, I've been playing for close to 15 years, both casually and semi-seriously, as an amateur musician. I've owned everything from boutique tube amps (eg Egnater IE4) to simple old tube amps (50's Fender). For a while I thought Line 6 products were beneath me. I even considered buying the Spider IV "settling." Now? I'm definitely changing my tune. Discussion about the tone of the amp aside, the shortboard is the difference between the Spider IV being a neat toy for home and an amp you can actually use in live settings. The simplicity of having your entire rig in one amp and a single pedal unit with only a single 110V power supply between them is great. No worrying about a patch cable going bad or running out of 9V batteries. No weird hum from the poorly grounded club and your vintage tremelo pedal. It's nice.
Down to the board specifically... right out of the box, you can switch between banks and presets, turn the four categories of effects (stomp, modulation, delay, reverb) on or off, control tap speed, turn on the gain boost, run the looper and have a switchable volume/wah pedal. That's a lot of stuff with no setup. And if you spend a lot of time with the amp, you really don't need much more from there.
When you plug into your computer and use the Line 6 edit software, you can get a lot more out of this thing. For one, it's a lot easier to change the presets on your amp. You have much more finite control over every amp/effect setting. Plus, you have access to things you normally wouldn't. For example, if you are using the pitch shifter, you can set it to be controlled by the expression pedal. You can set any of the time-based effects to be tap controlled or run off a specific delay time. You can copy/paste presets as well. Beyond that, it's a lot easier to be organized with designing your amp settings. For me at least, I like having a graphical view of all my volume settings and the ability to move presets around with a mouse so I can make sure everything I'll use while playing a given set is in a place that makes sense and one channel won't be considerably louder/quieter.

Line 6 Spider IV 150 150-watt 2x12 Modeling Guitar Amplifier Review

Line 6 Spider IV 150 150-watt 2x12 Modeling Guitar Amplifier

I have played the guitar and other instruments for a little over 50 years. I have a collection of fine guitars that is modest in number but consists of some of the best instruments made. I am retired and play my music in a studio in my home that contains only two amplifiers and all the audio equipment necessary for a high grade amateur studio. One of these amplifiers is an old Fender Princeton; the other is a Line 6 Spider IV 150. I have not played professionally since the 70's because I decided to use my energy to become successful in business. Even though I have not played professionally for a long period of time, I have kept on top of the technology that is now available to guitarists that were only a dream in 1970. During my 50 years of playing I have played on many guitar amplifiers, all of which were supposed to be the "best" but rarely did they ever meet my quest for quality of sound regardless of price. I must say that the Line 6 Spider IV 150 combo amp is, in my opinion, the best value in guitar amplifiers I have ever come across for the following reasons:
1) The 150 watt amplifier section is powerful and permits high volume playing of clean sounds that remain clean. I assume it is a high current amp because of the nature of the delivery of its power.
2) The ability to produce many sounds through on board effects surpasses any other amp I have played.
3) The efficient use of controls on the face of the amp allows one to play and use all of the effects in an understandable system of controls which actually reduces the number of knobs by making many of them multipurpose controls that really are easy to use. The control of the amp benefits significantly by the addition of the optional "Short Board" that allows pedal adjustment and stomp on/off functions of all important controls. This short board is constructed of high strength materials and seems to be built to last a lifetime. (That may not be as long in my case, but I feel comfortable applying this statement to younger players.) The short board is not a necessity, but its addition makes the Spider IV 150 an integrated system in which the amplifier and short board complement each other. For live playing, the short board is a necessity. There is a larger two pedal board that I do not think is necessary nor worth the cost.
(4) The circuitry is quiet enough to permit direct amp to mixer recordings.
(5) While the Spider IV is a solid state amp, its sound is great, and will not disappoint those needing an amp of this size and power. However, I have become accustomed to quality solid state amps and have never really caught on to regularly overdriving tube amps to achieve an effect. This personal feeling may come from my early years of playing where overdriving was not an intended sound, but was simply the result of trying to play louder than the amp's capabilities. In the early 60's virtually all amps were underpowered and few groups could push much of their volume through large and powerful stage setups because they were frequently unavailable. This brings back the memory that even when I played as a teenager with a group, there frequently were situations where the power available in the venue was capable of driving all of our equipment. We satisfied this problem by always taking 6 12 gauge 100 foot extension cables.
(6) The 2 12" speakers seem to be able to reproduce whatever the amplifier can deliver (within reason).
I have been happy with the Spider IV 150 for almost a year and I believe I have used it enough to allow any shortcomings to surface. I have not detected any signs of shortcomings and, accordingly, I highly recommend this amplifier.

Line 6 Floor Board Review

Line 6 Floor Board

(More customer reviews)
I bought this as a christmas gift for my son, he has a Line 6 SpiderI, so it was difficult to find a footswitch for it. The amp sounds great but until we purchased the floorboard he wasn't able to switch channels easily.
When he opened it there was one page of easy-to-follow instructions that had him up and running in a few minutes.
