Visual Sound Route 66 American Overdrive Review

Visual Sound Route 66 American Overdrive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is a new version out, upgraded with additional noise suppression. Of course, I always thought noise is what you make it, so make the most of it. This box is for the pure, classic sounds. A tube screamer and the best compression short of a janglebox. I play it doing acoustic; classic rock on a strat; but most of all blues and rock on my homemade electric 12. Practically nothing this box can't do. I'm going for the new model, but definitely keeping this one.

The Visual Sound Route 66 American Overdrive gives you 2 classic effects for the price of one. This handsome stomp box features classic compression and overdrive. The great-sounding overdrive channel is modeled after the sound of the original Tube Screamer, but it also has a bass boost switch. The compressor can be set for classic squash or clean boost with the unique preamp stage and gain knob. This allows for a truckload of clean gain. The compressor even has its own tone control. The 2 effects can be used independently or combined to complement one another.

Carl Martin Octaswitch Review

Carl Martin Octaswitch
Average Reviews:

My pedals sound amazing. No dancing. Incredible. Only thing that sucks but that is just inherent in the pedal is how many cables are needed. Like 16 cables. It's crazy. But the pedal is true bypass which makes my rig sound so friggin good. I'm in the process of making my own cables because it's cheaper and I can get specific lengths. The Octa-switch is highly recommended.

When Carl Martin decided to create a baby-brother for his world famous Combinator, the details of simplifying an already simple effect controller made his head hurt.So Carl enlisted the help of Thomas Guldmann, and the Octa-switch was born. The concept is simple\'.take your eight favourite effects pedals, plug them into the eight individual loops (all true-bypass gold relays) on the Octa-switch, and then designate what effects you want connected to each of 8 banks via the worlds simplest and smallest DIP switches located over top of each of the eight bank switches.Thomas chose DIP switches because they are just eight individual on-off switches in a tiny tiny package. So if your effects are plugged into Loops 1-8, you simply turn the DIP switch ‘on\' for each of the effects you want in Bank 1, and then Bank 2 etc up to Bank 8.You can use one or all of the effects in each bank, and once you have designated a bank, do us both a favour and cover the DIP with a bit of tape to ensure nothing happens to the DIP switch when you are not looking\'\'like an errant hand, or a flood of beer. The Octa-switch is mono-in and mono/stereo out, with a choice of a buffered signal or not.The unit is powered by dual 9v batteries, or a regulated power supply like the Carl Martin Big John Power Supply, and is housed in an all metal case with heart-stopping (ok, well almost) graphics. So, the same basic options found in the digitally controlled units the famous guys are using, at a fraction of the cost!Carl\'s head stopped hurting\'..

Mod Tone Power Plant Review

Mod Tone Power Plant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually gave a list of my pedals to someone and asked what the best options would be, and this is one of the two recommended. While it is a great power supply, there are a couple issues that I've had with it, and unfortunately I'll have to exchange mine.
Let me start with the pros. For one, it's got variable voltage on the back. You can switch the 5 outlets from 9V to 12V, and if you want it, you can have the other two have "SAG" control, which emulates a worn battery. With some effects, getting a little less voltage can produce a cool effect. I don't need this, but it's a nice thought to have it there if I wanted to get a little... experimental... with my pedals. There's also 9V AC outlet on there, which is good if you need to power something like a Line 6 Modeler. I don't have one, but once again.. nice thought.
Now here are the issues I've had with it. For one, I think the Pedal Train is one of the most popular pedalboards on the market right now, and it happens to be the pedalboard that I use. When mounting this, the cutouts on the pedalboard don't match up with the outlets on this power supply. For clarification, I'm using the PT2, which has the same ratio for the cutouts as the PTJunior. The PTPro (I believe) won't have this issue. The problem this creates is that you can have the IEC power go into the Power Plant, but the 'courtesy' outlet on the other side will be blocked. It's not a huge issue, but it kind of makes having the extra outlet there pointless.
The DIP switches (for switching 9V>12V) are nestled right next to that outlet as well. Pro-you'll never accidentally switch one without realizing it, possibly causing damage to your pedal. Con-if you get a new pedal to hook in, you're going to have to remove the Power Plant in order to switch the voltage, if necessary. This isn't a huge issue, so long as you're not always getting different pedals. I think most people generally set up a pedal board and mostly keep it the same for a while. For people who are constantly rotating pedals around, just keep that in mind.
The biggest issue for me though, is that this unit only puts out 150mA per outlet. As the outlets are isolated, there's really no way to get more amperage per outlet. I use the Electro Harmonix Enigma, and that pedal requires 200mA. Luckily, I caught that immediately and the pedal wasn't damaged, but you can definitely fry your pedals or the power supply from that. Unfortunately, this is a deal breaker for me. I bought the power supply so that I wouldn't need to carry around the extra power bricks and all that nonsense and maintain organization. I might have still used it if I could at least access the courtesy outlet, but that's completely blocked off too.
Personally, I'm waiting for the T-Rex Chameleon to come out in the next couple of weeks (May, 2010). It's got 9V, 12V, 18V, and 12V AC, and each outlet supplies 300mA. There's only 5 outlets, but you can chain them, and 300mA should be more than enough to power most standard 9V pedals easily (my T-Rex Bass Juice overdrive/distortion takes only 20mA, for example). This supply is powerful and versatile enough to take care of most medium sized pedal boards, and I think will retail for just about the same amount as this Power Plant (~$200).

The ModTone Power Plant, is professional quality power supply for the discriminating player. This power supply is a heavy duty, multiple pedal power unit that rivals some of the biggest and best in the industry. The ModTone Power Plant features a toroidal transformer with isolated outputs. This unit shares many things in common with other power supplies, such as an IED power input, DIP switch power selection (9VDC to 12VDC), and two \'SAG-able" outputs, but that is where the comparison ends. We have placed the DIP switches on the back of the unit, so if it is mounted on a pedal-board, it does not need to be removed to access the switches. The SAG adjustment pots are trim pot set screws, to lessen the chance of inadvertent changes. A courtesy outlet on the back has been rotated 90 degrees to accommodate wall wart style plugs. But here is the big difference; of the eight total outputs, five are regular 9VDC, two are 9VDC with SAG, and the final output is a 9VAC. That gives the user the ability to use this supply to power everything from a wah to...you name it, all with one unit.

While I detest Line6's unwillingness to let the OneSpot power adaptor do the trick, this is an excellent, full length adaptor. I've managed to use it very conveniently, providing power from across the room, snaking under my bed and desk to my DL4.

Digitech PSS3-120 Power Supply for GNX2, GNX3, GNX3000, GNX4, J-Station
Average Reviews:

I've had 2 problems with this adapter:
1. If you use this with a less stable power supply (e.g. a generator) that's not load-balanced, it likely will fail - I've blown out 3 of these under such conditions and the GNX 3000 I use it with doesn't run on batteries and there's no protection circuitry in either. Note that other power supplies with other effects pedals on the same circuit did not fail and were fine. There's no fuse in either the GNX 3000 or the power supply system (which would be a nice cost-saving measure), so you're stuck with replacing the power supply. I recommend keeping a spare on hand.
2. the wire/ wire support on the low voltage side isn't very good. If you transport it around and use it a lot, the wire will break eventually so treat it carefully.
So, compared to other power supplies on other electronics, it's inferior, but it's the only choice you have.

Gator G-Bus-8-US Pedal Board Power Supply Review

Gator G-Bus-8-US Pedal Board Power Supply
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great product for the price ($100). There are great features: (8) 9-volt and (3) 18-volt power outlets to power your whole arsenal of pedals. Fulltone players will appreciate the multiple 18-volt outlets to really enhance the Fulltone line. The unit bolts conveniently to the bottom of the Gator pedal board to create an integrated unit.
The only drawback to this unit is that different cables are required to use 9-volt vs. 18-volt. This would not be a problem except that Gator only supplies one (1) 18-volt cable when three (3) outlets are available. So, with multiple pedals that can run at 18-volts, I have to choose which one gets the 18-volt. I cannot find any dealers that carry just the 18-volt cables (short of buying a second power supply) and even contacted Gator for some help (while they were nice and pretty responsive, they were no help - "We don't have any of these right now. Please check back.") Not the answer I was looking for but again, it was $100.
This is a great unit for home-players and folks who gig irregularly. For regular giggers, I would look at Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 or similar product.

Digitech XMC Multi-Voice Chorus Guitar Pedal with up to 16 voices Review

Digitech XMC Multi-Voice Chorus Guitar Pedal with up to 16 voices
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great pedal adds some cool tone to your guitar. I am using it on my acoustic and it really seems to "fill out" the sound. It will be great on Sunday mornings if no other guitar or piano is playing. It will help fill in. It sounds like a few guitars playing at once. If you turn the nobs up too far then it really does sound to digital for an acoustic, but it has a nice subtle effect at lower levels. The "rotary" effect is cool for electric guitar.

Digitech XMS Main Squeeze Compressor/Sustainer Guitar Pedal Review

Digitech XMS Main Squeeze Compressor/Sustainer Guitar Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great compression pedal. I'm not sure if it's entirely worth the $69.95 I bought it for, but she works, and she works well at that.
From the Main Squeeze I was able to get some extremely nice compression out of even a $90 electric guitar. However, if you're going to hook it up to a guitar for sustain, do it on a nice one, or else you'll get tons of noise as it amplifies your signal. You can do an okay job of blocking out some of the noise with the EQ knob, but even then you have to turn down the sustain a bit.
I would've like the attack/release control to have two separate knobs, but even without being so it's quite functional; if you do it right it will take the hard picking out of your sounds or really boost them up. It all depends on what sound you're hoping to achieve, but this pedal can do them all.

X-Series Main Squeeze\' Compressor/SustainerThe Main Squeeze\' compressor/ sustainer pedal avoids those choppy compression release and sustain problems found on other pedals. It does this by incorporating studio-quality dbx OverEasy\' compression technology that provides near-transparent compression, and delivers long, real-sounding sustain for your guitar. And you no longer have to grit your teeth hoping a ragged release doesn\'t suddenly chop up the tail of a sustained note, or have to endure a compression that makes notes sound thin and lifeless. You even get an EQ control so you can perfectly tune your compressed sound, which is especially useful for guitar. Controls feature Level, Attack, EQ, and Sustain. Outputs feature Amp Out, Mixer Out.
