PC CAKEWALK GUITAR TRACKS PRO 3 Review

PC CAKEWALK GUITAR TRACKS PRO 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Somebody at Cakewalk must be doing something right. Guitar Tracks Pro 3 is an amazing upgrade over the older versions.
The new interface is silky smooth. The metronome actually works.
And, I can finally record at 24 bit 96khz, which I couldn't do with a lot of competitor's software.
A lot of great new effects (look under GT FX). Really good new reverb, equalization (called "Q"). The new plugins look like expensive rack mount units that you drool over (but dare not buy) at music stores.
Okay, minor complaints that the software defaults are kinda weird (sound on sound record, among others) which are leftovers from the old Guitar Tracks software. Also the record button is tiny tiny tiny.
But all in all, for the basic recordist, this is one hot piece of software. If your not at version 3, definitely upgrade. After about an hour of twiddling around, you will be all grins.
And as we all know, Cakewalk actually includes a printed manual that a normal human being can use and understand.
Hats off to Cakewalk for an excellent upgrade.

The new Music Maker 16 comes with really cool new sounds and effects. For me the guitar amplifier Vandal se is the absolute highlight on this software! Furthermore I like the new option to play the instruments via the pc keyboard, with this I can play around and try some new melodies, if there is no midi keyboard close at hand.
5* because it is easy for beginners and extensive for pros (pros should have a look at the premium version of this software)!
Cheers

My Voice Review

My Voice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The feature list sounds awesome, but there is a catch: the software often mistakes certain musical sounds for vocals, in some cases suppressing some of the most prized elements of the recording.
I tried out version 1.4.5 with a couple of audio CDs and several MP3s. The program's interface is very rich in controls, and it seems especially busy because there is a large information pane that changes as you mouse over different parts of the window. This is handy because you don't need to right-click or press F1 for help, but as you move the mouse around it can be quite distracting. (It would be nice if there were a short delay so that the info pane didn't update until you had hovered the mouse over a particular control for a few hundred milliseconds.) After inserting a CD, the program either will find the names of the tracks in its local database or can look them up on the web. The player controls are fairly straightforward and you can use the mouse-over help combined with experimentation to decide which "special effects" you like.
To suppress the vocals on the current track, click the "MyVoice" button (arm holding microphone). You're likely to hear the volume decrease a bit as similar frequencies also are suppressed. You also may hear a little echo or "ghost voice" in the background, probably added in the studio to enhance the richness of the singer's voice. To adjust the effect, you click the MyVoice button to pop up a small panel that lets you boost or reduce the bass portion of the track, and make other adjustments that partially compensate for change in the higher registers. This part of the program could be better documented, but from my experiments, while it can help to rebalance the musical portions of the recording, it can't restore lost instruments. The problem was especially acute on the Santana hit Smooth, where many of the distinctive guitar solos disappeared along with Rob Thomas' vocals. Even percussion sounds, which a human could distinguish from a voice, occasionally were suppressed and impossible to restore. Because performance varies, you really just have to try it and see whether the effect "works" for your favorite songs.
(The Ripper lets you apply these adjustments to the tracks on a CD, saving the "no voice" tracks for future play. I didn't test this.)
When you are ready to sing, you call up the Sequencer. This dialog/pane leads to the options to record your own vocals and then mix them with the original track. The settings you made for the musical track in the player will carry over to the Sequencer, and you can make further adjustments as you desire. When recording your voice, it is best to have the Music Effects controls visible because then the program gives you visual feedback on the volume of your microphone and stops recording when the song is finished (otherwise, you have to stop it manually). When you play back your recording, you may be distressed to find that it is out of sequence with the original track. There is no way to adjust that at this point, so you should try to focus on the relative volume of the two tracks and whether you want to add any reverb, echo or other effects to your voice. When you are ready to mix them together, you click "Creates the mix music+vocals." After the software imports the two tracks, you can "pre-listen" to the mix and adjust the synchronization. I found that the program had sync gaps of anywhere from 75 to 200 milliseconds for MP3s, but was perfect for audio CD tracks. If the relative volume needs further adjustment, you need to cancel out of this dialog and return to the sequencer (this is a little frustrating since it seems as though it should be such a simple adjustment). When your mix is perfect, you can save it as a WAV file and, optionally, burn it to audio CD.
All in all, it's a fun toy with a number of frustrations. Other developers could learn from the software's unique behavior when you click on a control that is not available because you have a dialog open: it move the pointer to the dialog's close button and highlights it so you know what you need to do to navigate to that control. On the other hand, this can happen when you click in the wrong part of a control that actually is currently available. (For example, when the Sequencer is open, you can drag the sliders on the Equalizer, but if you double-click a slider to enter a numeric value, the pointer moves to the Sequencer's Close button even though this is a perfectly appropriate function in that context.) Some quibbles arise from lack of compliance with Windows conventions. For example, the navigator to browse for MP3s has a tree view in the left pane, but cannot show subfolders in the right pane, just files. That should be easy to fix. However, the main problem is that the software simply falls short of the very ambitious project of removing just the vocals. In this, the developers may be ahead of the market (and available freeware), but they still have a lot of work to do.

Take your favorite audio CDs and replace the singer. Hide the main vocals on your audio CDs, change the key, change the tempo, and adapt the songs to your singing style, add lyrics, use studio quality effects, record and mix your own voice over the original song, create and burn your songs to audio CD's and play them onto your stereo, your PC, i-Pod - anywhere! It's time for you to be the singer, and become the star. Amazing features: You hide the vocals of your audio CD's in REAL TIME (this new technology is accurate for about 80% of the audio CD's of the market today. MyVoice cannot remove vocals from live recordings and/or very old recordings). MyVoice also adapts any song to your voice and your singing style: transposition up to +/- 1 octave without changing the speed of the music. You can also change the tempo without changing the pitch of the music or even use these two features combined together! When you've created your masterpiece burn the finished result onto an audio CD, usable on your regular home stereo system. With MyVoice you get a recording studio at your fingertips. • Record and mix your voice over the original soundtrack and create your own remixes. • Studio effects give your final creations a professional sound (reverb, flanger, chorus, echo, compressor, 10 band equalizer) • The karaoke window lets you enter all lyrics for your song (in sync with the music). • The CD-burning window lets you record and burn your creations on a regular audio CD readable on any home stero system. • MyVoice also has an integrated easy-to-use ripper: all your CD's can be converted into wav or mp3 files .

Propellerhead Record Software Recording Studio for Musicians Review

Propellerhead Record Software Recording Studio for Musicians
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got Propellerhead Record a couple weeks ago, and I was looking forward to it quite a bit. A recording solution from the people who made the awesome, easy-to-use, stable, and incredibly fun Reason? All I could say was "what took you so long?"
This won't be too in-depth, but I wanted to give a couple flags of clarification for folks out there considering buying Record as a stand-alone recording package (without Reason or any other Rewired software tools).
1) Record has no MIDI-out capability. That means, unlike all the other major sequencing-recording packages out there, using just Record alone, you will have no way to sequence, control, synchronize with any hardware equipment via MIDI. Got an old Yamaha Motif or Access Virus module you'd like to sequence with MIDI and then record the output into Record? Well, you can't do it unless you use some other software (Sonar, Cubase, etc) to do the actual sequencing and then synchronize that software with Record using Rewire (Rewire is a protocol that lets both Reason and Record communicate/synchronize with other recording and sequencing software, like Sonar or Cubase). Have to admit...had I realized this before I bought it, I might have held off on purchasing Record. I never thought to ask because I just assumed it would be a feature.
2) Unless you already have Reason or buy the Record/Reason package, your options for MIDI sequencing soft synths with Record will only be the ID-8 sample based synth that's included with it. It's not bad, but if that's ALL you have for soft synth access, it's fairly limited. And like Reason, Record won't let you use any other plug-in soft synths.
So, what are your options to best use Record?
* Buy it with Reason. The arsenal of great quality soft synths, effects, and tools at your disposal are too valuable to pass up and perfectly complement Record. And Reason so perfectly integrates with and complements Record (no "Rewire" required for them to "talk"), that Record almost seems handicapped without it. I already owned Reason, so currently this is the option I'll use the most. It's easy and covers most of what I want to do.
* Learn how to play your hardware keyboards/synths so well you don't need to sequence them (the same option guitarists have had to live with). I'm a mediocre keyboard player...some days my timing is great and I do very little MIDI manipulation of sequenced tracks...other days I stay sane by being able to edit bad note events and quantizing. As well, I have some old "no-MIDI" analog synths, so I'm used to having to play (with no sequencing option) occasionally while recording. Were I a better player I'll admit, the no-MIDI-out issue with Record would be much LESS of an issue.
* Use it with another software sequencer using Rewire. I had already planned on doing this somewhat because Record doesn't handle video, and I do the occasional soundtrack for video projects I throw together. My Reason has been Rewired to Sonar on quite a few occasions and has worked nicely. Additionally, I have a couple of really nice hardware synths that I use a lot when I compose/record. In order to get them sequenced and more easily recorded, I'll likely end up Rewiring Sonar to Record.
So lastly, you're wondering, "with all the required workarounds, is it even worth buying Record?"
If you're new to computer based recording, not too heavily invested in any other recording packages, and you don't have any hardware synths you like to sequence, then Record with Reason is a no-brainer and a big yes. It's a nice, professional sounding, easy-to-use and easy-on-the-CPU package that provides most of what you could want for home recording and music production. But, if you do a lot of video, or rely extensively on MIDI control of music hardware then unfortunately you'll still need other software to provide that capability and you might as well consider going with another recording/sequencing package.
Yep, it's true. Without MIDI-out, other Rewired software and Reason, Record is really just a nice, very easy-to-use, PC-based version of an old recording studio. What you mostly get out of it is what you can manually record into it (and manipulate digitally). Record clips of sound, music, vox into it, edit, add effects, mix and voila! Finished songs!
As for me, for now I'll likely keep using all three...Reason, Sonar, and now Record, and then I'll throw a BIG party when Record incorporates MIDI-out. Based on discussions at Propellerhead forums it's a definite possibility they're already working on the feature. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Because of the required workarounds, for me I can't give it a 5-star rating. But given all the other strengths and the capability Rewire gives it, it's a VERY solid 4.
***Added note for new Record 1.5: No, even the new 1.5 version doesn't have MIDI-out. Let's hope for 2.0.

Music Maker 17 Review

Music Maker 17
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought this, and I have to admit that it is absolutely terrible. For one,the technical support sucks.
You have to pay just to get help with any of their products. This software isn't like Magix music maker 15 and 16. This one is more geared towards "MIDI" and everything else, but not actual recordings. When you try recording (like guitar for example) the tracks just erase each other, and you have to everything manually. Unlike Magix music maker 15,each time you would record it would record on a new track and it would ask you if you wanted to keep that take or not. This one is just so dumbed down,I hate it.
I hate this software and I completely regret buying it. I cant even record anything. Don't buy this.If your serious about your music, buy something else. This is a joke.

Finale SongWriter 2010 Review

Finale SongWriter 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
They call it Finale Songwriter, and that's who it seems to be aimed at; I bought it to do charts for a friend who is a singer/songwriter, and I found it to be quite up to the task.
I got tired of updating the full Finale program, which I purchased back around 1995; the last update I bought was Finale 2001; updating every year was expensive, some $100 for each year's new update; and it was annoying, too, since each new version seemed like it had to be learned all over again; so I finally stopped getting updates and stayed with my 2001d version. Since I don't do much music charting, it was pointless to keep shelling out money for new updates.
Now, here we are in 2010; I'm using a newer Mac with OS X, and the few times I have to do notation, I have to run Classic Mode in order to use my ancient 2001d version of Finale, and already, the updates are requiring a later version of the OS than I have... so I checked out the various versions of Finale, and found this one; Songwriter 2010 is (I think) the last of the Finale programs that will still work with 10.4... and it's also the least expensive, so I thought I would check it out. There is a fully-functional 30-day trial version available to download, so I tried it out by charting a few of my friend's songs with it.
Even with Songwriter, there is a bit of a learning curve, since music notation is a bit of an involved, detailed process. But I found that all of the important functions are easily accessible, and once you get the hang of what menu they're under, it seems to flow pretty well. All the important functions are present; what seems to be missing is all the customizing capability of the full Finale, such as all the little variations of the Repeat signs. It has Simple Note Entry, which is just grabbing a note with the mouse and placing it on the staff; this can be streamlined quite a bit if you have a MIDI keyboard: you use the numeric keypad to select a note value, and play a note on the MIDI keyboard to place it on the staff. I was thrilled to discover that Songwriter also has the Hyperscribe feature, which starts up a metronome, and lets you play a part into the program in real time. All the important text functions and spacing and layout controls are available too, so you can get a chart looking just right. It is limited to 8 staves, but for ordinary song charting, I can't imagine needing more than 3 or 4.
In my opinion, Songwriter is more than adequate to most basic charting needs, and Finale has an upgrade policy if you should ever need more capability. Best of all, you can try the program for 30 days to determine if it will suit your needs.
