Behringer OD100 2-Mode Overdrive/Distortion Review

Yeah, I know, you get what you pay for.... I figured with electronics the way they are today, even a cheap unit would be pretty good, but I was disapointed. It is barely better then the cheap fuzz box I had 20 years ago. Additionally, the electronic switch is very touchy and keeps swapping in and out (the humidity in my house is a bit low this winter).
For 10 bucks more, the one my nephew bought has a much better sound and more change in sound as you play with the controls.

Fulltone GT-500 Distortion and Overdrive Booster Review

Fulltone GT-500 Distortion and Overdrive Booster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been playing guitar for some 20 years or more and it's the simple things that get my attention as far as gear goes, keeping my attention is a hard thing to do with gear. Face it; we all do the same things, nice new pedals, great looking guitars, or amps that we can't live without. Wow...It's called G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). In the end we keep the things that work and the rest of the "stuff" gets sold on eBay (for a loss in most cases). Fulltone pedals have become the "attention holders" for me now. I have 3 on my pedal board (OCD, GT-500, and the Octafuzz) along with some MXR time based effects. The GT-500 is the most versatile distortion pedal that I have used period. The thing is built like a tank, has simple controls and it is really 2 pedals in one. The clean boost side has tone controls to fine tune if needed and a Drive control that will add a slight amount of grind for great 60's and 70's rhythm tones. The volume is for output and output is has, with lots of throttle so look out, it will seriously drive a tube amp into OD. The Distortion side has volume and drive controls. Just set the drive up past 1 o'clock and it grinds wicked. There are 2 unique things on this pedal that I love: 1. the mids frequency control for the distortion side (it's an inductor like in a WAH pedal, scooped Mids anyone?). 2. The switch that allows you to choose the order of the pedals, booster into distortion (Very High Gain!!) or distortion into booster (Very Loud!!). Wicked tone from fat warm distorted Fender amp to the distinct shrill grinding of a Marshall or overdriven Vox. It's all in there, just need to find your tone. It costs more than most pedals but it's really 2 pedals in one so look at it that way. It's the last one I plan on buying. Try it, then keep it...

Discrete F.E.T Hi-Gain Distortion and Overdrive Booster IN ONE BOX. You could think of them as 2 separate pedals. or think of them as stages to be linked together for endless combinations. Hi-Gain side has Volume, Distortion knobs, Bass, Mid, and Highs minipots. Booster Side has Volume, Overdrive knobs, Bass and Highs minipots. (these new hi-Q sealed minipots don't break BTW) Hard clipped distortion (the way most pedals achieve distortion) at one point in a circuit can be cool, but stage after stage of FET (GT-500) is very real, very amplike, has ridiculous amounts of sustain even at low volume, does the great chunky low string rhythm stuff and cleans up incredibly well when you turn down the guitar's volume. The GT500 contains 9 x FET's, 2 Mosfets and 1 x Transistor with no opamps or clipping diodes used. What's special about the EQ? The Hi-Gain side has a discrete Inductor-Driven Midrange circuit....never been done in a pedal before. Yes there's a wah wah inductor inside the pedal that gives the Midrange control its ability to drastically increase or decrease the entire Low Mid, Mid, and Hi-Mid frequencies, to comical proportions. All this is done without any opamps because all of the active 3 Band EQ's I've tried are horrible, killing all harmonics, all excitement, and sounding as sterile as the "EQ" in a Digital Recording Program. Nope, this has 100% discrete matched FET's ;) This Mid control mixed with a strong Bass and Treble control help give the GT-500 the ability to dial in more variations than a simple tone control, which can only roll off the Highs. What's the "Series switch" in the middle do? The Series Select Switch allows you to choose which pedal comes first (allowing you to instantly change the order of the 2 circuits) Booster Distortion or Distortion Booster for example: A clean boost slamming into the front end of a Distortion sounds way different than a distortion followed by the clean boost...and when the EQ's of the respective...

This is something new.
If you are sick of same distortion, take this! This is different.
It sounds like distortion+synth+auto wah+octave....
However, If you like vintage sound, don't take it.
REMEMBER...this is way different.

The Soundblox Multiwave Bass Distortion features the same multi-band process that made the original Multiwave guitar pedal so popular, but this time, the Source Audio engineers adapted the process to compliment the unique frequency range of the bass guitar. Multi-band processing divides a signal into multiple bands then distorts them individually, giving musicians unprecedented levels of sound clarity and note articulation. Bassists can effectively combine complex chords and intervals with distorted tones-the Multiwave eliminates the mush and allows each note to ring clear and true.

Visual Sound Route 66 American Overdrive Review

Visual Sound Route 66 American Overdrive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is a new version out, upgraded with additional noise suppression. Of course, I always thought noise is what you make it, so make the most of it. This box is for the pure, classic sounds. A tube screamer and the best compression short of a janglebox. I play it doing acoustic; classic rock on a strat; but most of all blues and rock on my homemade electric 12. Practically nothing this box can't do. I'm going for the new model, but definitely keeping this one.

The Visual Sound Route 66 American Overdrive gives you 2 classic effects for the price of one. This handsome stomp box features classic compression and overdrive. The great-sounding overdrive channel is modeled after the sound of the original Tube Screamer, but it also has a bass boost switch. The compressor can be set for classic squash or clean boost with the unique preamp stage and gain knob. This allows for a truckload of clean gain. The compressor even has its own tone control. The 2 effects can be used independently or combined to complement one another.

Eagletone Distortion Pedal Review

Eagletone Distortion Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a guitarist that was used to using the on board volume to bust open the floodgates of power from my amplifiers, I wanted to find a pedal that gave me options so that I could shape my sound at a lower volume and then raise the volume as need be. I was initially pretty thrilled with the pedal and believed it would have a place in my pedal board...then, I had some reservations...
Short and to the point, Eagletone (Biyang) do not make an adapter for their pedals. (Personally, I thought this rather odd.) A regular 9 volt adapter will not work with this pedal either. Thankfully, Danelectro has the D-1 9 volt adapter which is rated at 9.6 volts and it works great. If you buy this pedal or any other pedal made by this company, get a Danaelectro D-1 adapter.
This pedal has options (Normal/Max/Turbo) on a mini toggle switch. IMHO, Max had more of an edge than Turbo, but knowing that in advance, it's easy to adjust and use. Basically, it's three Rat distortion clones in a box...
I do like it and I can see that given time to tweak it and find the sweet spot for each position of the toggle, I will use it.
Had the company made their own power adapters or at least made the use of something more universal possible, I'd have given it 4 stars...
Had the audible difference in positions on the toggle switch been consistant, it's a 5 star pedal.

Equipped with 3 modes, Normal, Max and Turbo offering the player a multitude of unique types of distortion. There's a distortion knob which allows you to add or decrease the amount of drive for a heavy metal sound or just a nice crunch! Also a Filter knob has been added for more additional tone! The metal chassis is built to take a stomping and backed with a full 5 year warranty. It runs on a 9 volt battery or any 9v AC Adaptor (not included). The Eagletone "Mouse" Distortion Pedal will really make your guitar tone stand out!

DigiTech CM-2 HardWire Tube-Overdrive Extreme-Performance Pedal Review

DigiTech CM-2 HardWire Tube-Overdrive Extreme-Performance Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried this pedal at the store and my first thought was "Everything sounds better at the store but then you get it home and buyers remorse starts to set in." But a week later I picked it up and for the past three months I've been using it daily.
So many pedals say they have real tube tone but never quite get it right but the HardWire Tube Overdrive is one of the few that does. If you like blues tones this'll warm up even the thinnest sounding solid state amp. The low and high knobs really have a big effect on the overall tone, so much so that in making adjustments I sometimes only have to turn a knob the width of a couple hairs to get the tone I'm looking for. The knobs have a nice mild 'notched' feel to them so you can adjust one or two 'notches' and know where that tone is even if you go to a different setting.
You have a lotta range in the drive knob as well. From a nice clean boost sound to a very hard rockin' overdrive. But the real star in this pedal is the classic/modified switch. Using this with the drive opens up the possibilities in this pedal.
In classic mode with a healthy amount of drive you'll be playing Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tom Petty, Hendrix, Santana and loads of your own classic style riffs. In Modified mode you'll be amazed at how tight the drive is. I love it for Joe Walsh, Cheap Trick and it's perfect for Aerosmith's 'Sweet Emotion'.
If you're the kind of player that just likes to set it and leave it alone, this pedal (as well as all pedals in the HardWire line) come with a rubber cover that slips over the steel knobs and switch so they will never be accidently moved from your settings.
If you have a pedalboard that uses velcro, Digitech (the makers of HardWire pedals) also include an adhesive velcro strip fitted to the pedals 'footprint' and a glow-in-the-dark strip that you can apply to the pedals top so you can see it on a dark stage.
So, what is the downside of this pedal? Well, it eats batteries like candy. You'll want to invest in a power supply. It draws a lot of power so if you want more than one HardWire pedal I'd suggest the 1 Spot by Visual Sound and a daisy chain connector.
It's also a little noisy although not really any more than you'd expect from an overdrive pedal. This becomes a real problem though when you run one overdrive into another. A good noisegate will be needed. But oh how good it sounds when you run them together like that!
Try it!
In closing, This pedal is going to stay out of the old unused-pedal-box-in-back-of-the-closet purgatory for misbehaving pedals for a long, long time. It's price tag of about $100 places it in the same price range as other quality overdrives but I'm much happier having spent this much on this pedal than some others I've picked up in the past.

Johnson FX-110 Tube Overdrive Pedal Review

Johnson FX-110 Tube Overdrive Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got mine this evening and took a look at it. The carton was wrecked, which is perhaps why this lot was on sale.
It's kind of funny. What it looks like exactly is that whatever PLA laogai labor camp that makes those cheesy tools in the dollar store that break the first time you use them decided to go into the business of making Boss stompbox clones. That's exactly the "look" these have.
It's really amazing how they copied, however ineptly and cheaply, so many unique features of the Boss line. I wouldn't be surprised if the circuit is a copy of some Boss pedal's. Construction is also Boss-copied -- through-board, flying leads, same unique switch, same actuator arrangement, same battery access arrangement, identically creased plastic insulator plate...the case is just longer and the knobs smaller and cheaper, and lacking switching overtravel protection, which will probably result in early switch failure.
BUT...it actually is a adequate overdrive, somewhat better than I expected! Distortion ramp is gradual and manageable and the sound keeps its definition in complex chording. The tone control is not that great, but about what you normally get with the one-knob arrangement.
The circuit is fairly complex for the price, a 4558D OpAmp and about eight JFETs and a fistful of passives.
I suspect this must be a straight copy of another pedal, but I'm not sure which. Despite the green paint, this is not a Tubescreamer circuit. BTW, this OpAmp is NOT the same as the one in the old Tubescreamer, merely a modern OpAmp with the old number. The tooling for the original was destroyed decades ago, and the OpAmp was less a determinant of the original Tubescreamer sound than the old Panasonic clipping diodes were, also extinct but reissued in name only -- but not used in this particular unit.

This is basically a mediocre distortion unit with more tone-shaping options than usual, which does make it a bit more useful than it would otherwise be.

Source Audio Soundblox Pro Multiwave Bass Distortion Effects Pedal Review

Average Reviews:

I'm giving this 5-stars YET I ended up returning it. In the final analysis, an amazing pedal but it just wasn't a fit for me and my style. That said, many players will find this a welcome addition to their pedalboard for home, gigs and the studio.
Source has given us bass players a truly novel pedal. Well thought out and executed. Quite honestly, it is unlike every other distortion pedal for bass. Really. It has the ability to produce an incredibly wide range of sounds and tones like no other single pedal. Here is my bottom-line...
- Most importantly, know upfront that if you are looking for "traditional" OD, boost and/or fuzz capabilities this pedal doesn't go there. It doesn't replace those pedals.
- It's real strength - and what it excels at - is in producing a very wide-array of synth-like tones. I've NEVER heard anything like it. Truly amazing range. You won't believe what you will hear. Sounds you've never imagined in your wildest dreams. And I might add...Very, VERY funky! Could potentially replace envelope filters and the like that you may be using.
- The ability to seamlessly morph from one sound setting to another (pro model only via an expression pedal) is incredible.
- Pick playing just doesn't do the pedal justice. This is a big one...Sounds much, much better if you are primarily a finger-style or slap player rather than a pick player like me. The pedal really shines and is at its best when you play finger/slap style. Pick playing seems to mute and alter the intended sound dynamics - for me, in a negative way. Not sure why this occurs.
- I've never seen a pedal with so many ways to adjust and fine-tune every setting - especially on the pro model. The settings are very sensitive and you can really tailor every setting to suit you, your bass, your amp and your style - and then save it to one of 6 locations.
- Made just for bass. Their proprietary technology really works as promised. It does an amazing job of handling and not losing any bass tone. You can readily hear each string (individually and in chords) even when highly distorted. Far from the usual undifferentiated, muddy mess of sound that most distortion pedal produce.
All in all, Source offers the bass player a pedal like no other. In a world of me-too products they have broken the mold and the rules. But, you need to determine if the sounds it produces are a fit with your style and musical tastes. Only you can do that. I suggest you go to their site - sourceaudio - and check out their sound sample videos and audios, which are very well-done incidentally.
As always.....YMMV.........

There are 21 different sounds in this product. Most of them are new but really sound great. I note 3 highlights:
1) The Multiwave processing allows complex cords to be played with unual clarity.
2) The Octave settings do not use pitch detection and are easy to play.
3) The Foldback settings create some really interesting harmonics as notes decay.
All n all a very fun and affordable new distortion pedal.

The Multiwave Distortion features 21 distinctive and modern effects not found on typical distortion pedals. Based on new proprietary algorithms, these range from basic overdrive sounds to aggressive synth-like, octave heavy and extreme foldback settings that go far beyond emulations of typical 'classic' distortions. The Multiwave Distortion's unique Multi-Band mode divides the input signal into several frequency bands, which are distorted separately before being re-combined. Guitarists can play complex distorted chords and each note can be heard with absolute clarity. Several notes can feed back or drone simultaneously while a separate melody is played on top without the typical loss of volume associated with most of other types of distortion. The Multiwave Distortion is also compatible with the Hot Hand® motion sensor. When connected, Hot Hand® controls the amount of gain.

Carl Martin PlexiTone Pedal Review

Carl Martin PlexiTone Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are several good analog pedals that replicate ( not model) the sound of a high-gain Marshall tube amp:
The Sansamp GT-2, and Sansamp "British" pedals, as well as the Sansamp PSA 1.1 all do a great job of that.
The Sansamp PSA 1.1 is best for rack-rigs where midi control and signal-routing flexibility are necessary.
The other two pedals are ideal if you must run with batteries.
If you want PURE ROCKIN MARSHALL TONE, PLUS a great boost feature ( up to 20 dB) then this Carl Martin Plexitone pedal is the best I've have ever heard in 40 years of professional playing. It has the TONE and FEEL of my Customized Marshall 100 watt head (circa 1969) that was modified by Jose Arrendondo in the late 70's.
The CM Plexitone has its own internal power supply, which is absolutely necessary for the massive headroom you need for authentic Marshal tone. That also means you do NOT need a "wall-wart" to run it, but it means you must find an outlet for it.
The three footswitches are robust and spaced so my size 12 boots hit the mark without problems. Bright blue LED lights give instant indication of what's ON. The high-impedance input helps reduce signal loss from cables. In effect, this acts as a buffered "front-end" for the rest of your chain... and it's a damn good buffer too.
If you like your basic amp sound, but need a better preamp for the front-end and could use a boost for solos, this is the pedal to get.
Over the last couple of decades, my friends and I have used various CM products. All of them are great. They build everything like they care. They are good at what they do and it shows. CM pedals are worth the extra dough.
Other than lucky auctions, I got the best price on a new one from Prymaxe, a dealer in New Jersey. The shipping was fast with no problems. Highly recommended.

The Carl Martin PlexiTone, is as the name might indicate an unusual high gain three step rocket of an overdrive. The PlexiTone offers two step overdrive, the crunch channel and the high gain channel, on top of that it gives you an up to 20dB clean boost channel. The crunch channel goes from subtle overdrive to hard rock gain stage, the high gain channel goes from rock gain stages to absolutely meltdown, with loads of gain and low end, and all in a tone that brings the memory back to the early 80's high gain guitar hero's. MXR M151 Double Shot Distortion Pedal Review

MXR M151 Double Shot Distortion Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Despite the bad press I have read about this unit, I decided to pick one up for myself for $59.00 on ebay. If you are looking to enhance the sound of your tube pre-amp, say in a Marshall JCM900 or a Peavey 5150 or 6505, then this is not the pedal for you. I tried it on all of these and had horrible results.
However, I tried it on all of my solid state non-tube stuff, especially straight from my furman PB8c into a live PA and found it to be one of the best sounding analog, non-tube distortions I have ever tried. This is a decent pedal, if you are patient durring setup it will pay off. I have been playing for 30 years and much of that time as a pro, so I have had a chance to play with a lot of gear. As far as distortion goes for my tastes (Iron Maiden) I do like the inboard distortion on my JCM and Peavey 6505. It is hard to beat or even compete with 5 - 12ax7 tubes in a row. Not many amps out there can even compete with that. But if tone is what you need out of a solid state rig, this pedal can provide it.
Guitars used: 1994 Hamer Daytona SSS, 1985 Charvel HH, 1998 Peavey Vandenberg HH, 2009 Fender "Texas Special" Tele SS.

I run it in order within a Decimater loop, Ernie Ball VPjr, BBE opto stomp, mxr151 doubelshot distortion, mxr136 stereo chorus, dual 1984 DOD FX90 analog delays seperated L/R in the furman loop, and out to dual BBE sonic stomps L/R. A true stereo mix. I do not use the 2nd channel except as a light overdrive for my clean tone and for that it works fine.
It is not a "supermetal" unit and sounds like a good and warm set of tubes, although Van Hallen tone is not out of its reach Black Label Society would be. If ober-metal is what you need then get the MXR Fullbore Metal Distortion Pedal M-116 or something like that.

Click Here to see more reviews about: MXR M151 Double Shot Distortion Pedal

There was a time when the MXR Distortion+ was the only distortion box that mattered. It was seen on stages worldwide and heard on hundreds of timeless recordings. Building on that proud history, MXR introduces an instant classic, the M-151 Double-Shot Distortion. With two distinct channels, huge output, and incredibly quiet operation, this pedal redefines what a distortion box should be. Dial in blues-approved grind or thick, old-school lead tones on one side. Then, with the touch of a button, call up bottom-heavy modern metal sounds or radically-EQ?ed future fuzz. But the options don?t stop there. Independent gain and EQ controls give you complete control over both sides of this pedal?s split personality. You can set up the Double-Shot to go from an in-the-pocket chord part to an over-the-top lead line. Or toggle between two unique solo tones. Or switch between two drastically different rhythm tones. Get all your gain from the pedal or use its massive output to get screaming overdrive from your amp. And no matter how dirty you run the Double-Shot, all the subtle details and dynamics of your playing will come through. If you can imagine it, the Double-Shot can make it a reality?a gloriously distorted reality. Power:Dunlop ECB-004 18-volt AC Adapter. (Included).

Average Reviews:

This pedal is versatile and sound like a million bucks. I'm able to get a "fuzz face" sound out of it as well as more modern, "fizzy" type fuzzs as well. It interacts well with my other pedals, a wah and over drive box, without any problems. The internal trim pots make this a pedal that most anyone who wants to use fuzz instead of distortion can use to get their own particular sound. I typically run it with a low power over drive pedal "on" as well, which makes for a nicely compressed Eric Johnson type of sound. I'm running it into the front end of a 65 Deluxe Reverb RI amp and it interacts well with it. The construction on it are top-notch and I fully expect this pedal to keep running for a decade or more. One caveat, I'm not a gigging musician, so it hasn't had to survive the rigors of constant travel for me.

The most sought after corpulent Way Huge pedal is back with new features... and it still has "more fuzz than a moldy peach!"With added controls the Swollen Pickle MkII surrenders super high-gain fuzz with copious amounts of smooth low-end to all who dare plug into it. With a twist of the SUSTAIN control you're taken from mild crunch to Armageddon! The FILTER control retains its trademark insane range of heavily band-pass-filtered tones distinguished by remarkable girth and sizzle and the LOUDNESS puts out enough volume to clobber any amp!Newly added features include a tone stack SCOOP control that elicits classic Swollen Pickle mid-scoop or flat mid-frequency sweep and a CRUNCH knob to adjust the compression intensity of the fuzz. Finally under the hood the Swollen Pickle MkII has two internal mini voice controls: VOICE sets the intensity of the external SCOOP control from light to heavy mid cut and CLIP varies between two sets of clipping diodes for smooth or opened fuzz sustain.Technical InfoInternal ControlsThese controls are for fine-tuning to your guitar and amp rig: Voice - sets the intensity of the external scoop control Clip -varies between smooth or opened fuzz sustain Controls LOUDNESS - generates enough volume to clobber any amp FILTER - adjusts the range of heavily band-pass-filtered tones SUSTAIN - releases masses of heavy violent fuzz SCOOP - sweeps between mid-scoop to flat mid-frequency CRUNCH - alters the compression intensity of the sustain

Simple: From a tube screamer to full bore metal.Tone,tone,tone.I run mine through a Twin reverb and it makes it sound like a Messa Boogie.I highly recomend any Blackstar product!I have been playing pro for 23 years,so I know what's up.This pedal will turn a weak amp into a monster. The tube really makes this pedal and the ISF knob takes you from England(Vox and Marshall) to America(Messa). What a brilliant, brilliant feature. If you need a pedal to cover all bases this is it.
