(More customer reviews)I got mine this evening and took a look at it. The carton was wrecked, which is perhaps why this lot was on sale.
It's kind of funny. What it looks like exactly is that whatever PLA laogai labor camp that makes those cheesy tools in the dollar store that break the first time you use them decided to go into the business of making Boss stompbox clones. That's exactly the "look" these have.
It's really amazing how they copied, however ineptly and cheaply, so many unique features of the Boss line. I wouldn't be surprised if the circuit is a copy of some Boss pedal's. Construction is also Boss-copied -- through-board, flying leads, same unique switch, same actuator arrangement, same battery access arrangement, identically creased plastic insulator plate...the case is just longer and the knobs smaller and cheaper, and lacking switching overtravel protection, which will probably result in early switch failure.
BUT...it actually is a adequate overdrive, somewhat better than I expected! Distortion ramp is gradual and manageable and the sound keeps its definition in complex chording. The tone control is not that great, but about what you normally get with the one-knob arrangement.
The circuit is fairly complex for the price, a 4558D OpAmp and about eight JFETs and a fistful of passives.
I suspect this must be a straight copy of another pedal, but I'm not sure which. Despite the green paint, this is not a Tubescreamer circuit. BTW, this OpAmp is NOT the same as the one in the old Tubescreamer, merely a modern OpAmp with the old number. The tooling for the original was destroyed decades ago, and the OpAmp was less a determinant of the original Tubescreamer sound than the old Panasonic clipping diodes were, also extinct but reissued in name only -- but not used in this particular unit.
