(More customer reviews)The Tascam HD24 is a great way to record audio, but the ethernet connection (10 MB/S) is an extremely painful way to get the digits from your recorder to your DAW. The FirePort 1394 sounds like it may be promising, but the software that makes it work will not work on 64 bit machine. On top of that, it is pretty archaic (based on the manual).
This is where the HD24Tools shareware comes in by Marc Brevort. With this little program, the Fireport become everything and more that you ever imagined it could be. It will give you an interface that mimics the front panel of your recorder including Mute and Solo buttons for auditioning each (or every) channel (which can be very handy when determining which tracks you want to take off). It enables you to capture any segment of a "song" and download that individually. It enables you to download the audio to your DAW HD VERY quickly (much faster than real time). You can even put audio (a variety of formats are supported) back onto the recorder. And if your drive has been corrupted, it even has tools to help you out of a jam if there is a remote possibility of recovering the audio. HD24Tools works with Mac, PC, and Linux.
By itself, the FirePort 1394 just does not work with 64bit systems. With the HD24Tools, this thing will pay for itself in time alone while downloading one or two recordings!
