I've shied away from PC recording ever since the beginning. Everyone else was raving about it but I simply could not get myself to start anything. I've tried a bunch of systems from other well known interface manufacturers but none of them could fix the main issue: LATENCY. With everything I'd try, I'd hear a delay when trying to monitor what I'm playing. It comes out as either a long delay or an echo. The delay is definitely not acceptable and the echo is terribly annoying, although manageable.
However, let me say this, I tried everything with my laptop. Maybe these other products are better suited to desktop applications with powerful sound cards, who knows. But, one thing's for sure, it didn't work for me. Then, I saw this product in the store by Cakewalk and thought I'd give it a whirl. It says right on the packaging that there's 0 Latency, so I got it and man, was that a great decision or what?
Not only is this thing much cheaper than the competition, it comes with Cakewalk Sonar, a recording suite that integrates seamlessly with the product. With the package you get the Sonar installer plus a drivers installer disk. I have Windows 7 so I had to download a Windows 7 version from their site (link was initially broken but was fixed soon after). With everything installed, the laptop recognized the gadget without any issues.
After some messing around, setting things up for ASIO, I/O, I was able to quickly record a song with my electric guitar and true enough, 0 latency! I then, tried plugging in my multi-effects gadget and recorded some pretty good takes. Wow, what a difference from a multi-track, where you're at the mercy of those little convoluted and incomplete menus and excruciatingly limited space!
If there's anyone else out there contemplating PC recording, here's your chance to finally give it a go! All you need is a computer, guitar, mic, cable and you're set! As far as effects/drums go, there's a wealth of studio quality products available that'll blow your mind!
I hate to sound like a Roland salesman, but again, I cannot recommend this enough. I wish they had this before I plunked down 20 times what this costs in recorders, interfaces, effects.
