(More customer reviews)Despite the bad press I have read about this unit, I decided to pick one up for myself for $59.00 on ebay. If you are looking to enhance the sound of your tube pre-amp, say in a Marshall JCM900 or a Peavey 5150 or 6505, then this is not the pedal for you. I tried it on all of these and had horrible results.
However, I tried it on all of my solid state non-tube stuff, especially straight from my furman PB8c into a live PA and found it to be one of the best sounding analog, non-tube distortions I have ever tried. This is a decent pedal, if you are patient durring setup it will pay off. I have been playing for 30 years and much of that time as a pro, so I have had a chance to play with a lot of gear. As far as distortion goes for my tastes (Iron Maiden) I do like the inboard distortion on my JCM and Peavey 6505. It is hard to beat or even compete with 5 - 12ax7 tubes in a row. Not many amps out there can even compete with that. But if tone is what you need out of a solid state rig, this pedal can provide it.
Guitars used: 1994 Hamer Daytona SSS, 1985 Charvel HH, 1998 Peavey Vandenberg HH, 2009 Fender "Texas Special" Tele SS.
I run it in order within a Decimater loop, Ernie Ball VPjr, BBE opto stomp, mxr151 doubelshot distortion, mxr136 stereo chorus, dual 1984 DOD FX90 analog delays seperated L/R in the furman loop, and out to dual BBE sonic stomps L/R. A true stereo mix. I do not use the 2nd channel except as a light overdrive for my clean tone and for that it works fine.
It is not a "supermetal" unit and sounds like a good and warm set of tubes, although Van Hallen tone is not out of its reach Black Label Society would be. If ober-metal is what you need then get the MXR Fullbore Metal Distortion Pedal M-116 or something like that.

There was a time when the MXR Distortion+ was the only distortion box that mattered. It was seen on stages worldwide and heard on hundreds of timeless recordings. Building on that proud history, MXR introduces an instant classic, the M-151 Double-Shot Distortion. With two distinct channels, huge output, and incredibly quiet operation, this pedal redefines what a distortion box should be. Dial in blues-approved grind or thick, old-school lead tones on one side. Then, with the touch of a button, call up bottom-heavy modern metal sounds or radically-EQ?ed future fuzz. But the options don?t stop there. Independent gain and EQ controls give you complete control over both sides of this pedal?s split personality. You can set up the Double-Shot to go from an in-the-pocket chord part to an over-the-top lead line. Or toggle between two unique solo tones. Or switch between two drastically different rhythm tones. Get all your gain from the pedal or use its massive output to get screaming overdrive from your amp. And no matter how dirty you run the Double-Shot, all the subtle details and dynamics of your playing will come through. If you can imagine it, the Double-Shot can make it a reality?a gloriously distorted reality. Power:Dunlop ECB-004 18-volt AC Adapter. (Included).
