Mod Tone Speedbox Distortion Pedal Review

I was hesitant when I ordered this pedal. I've been looking for a pedal that's full of character without a lot of hum. I plugged it in, dialed it in, and it blew me away. It has plenty of crunch but plenty of clarity as well. I looked at so many pedals, but I couldn't be happier. Clicks a little when you engage it, but otherwise perfect.

The ModTone MT-DS Speedbox is a split bypass boutique style distortion pedal that emulates the tones of a vintage amp or classic overdrive and is housed in a compact all metal box that can take all you dish out! What may appear as just another fuzzbox is quite different once you hear what the MT-DS can do. It is simply put, a pre-amp in itself! A deliberately simple 3 knob configuration is the gateway to overdrive bliss starting with a custom tailored \'Tone" knob that provides just the right amount of sparkle and warmth while still retaining all the crunch and tonal clarity you love without a hint of noise! Next is the \'Drive" knob and its truly where the heart of this pedal lies with its custom voiced overdrive circuit and proprietary gain stage setting that allows you the option of getting adelicious overdrive tone from your clean amp or, on your amp's overdrive setting,a thick and creamy lead boost that sustains for days! Last up is the \'Level" control that allows you to select the perfect amount of gain whether you\'re style is a touch of the blues or a full out metal blitzkrieg!

Mod Tone Dyno Drive Overdrive Review

I really like the pedal as a way of boosting my tube amps from a cruch to a distortion with more sustain. It makes my Fender red knob Twin sound less Rolling Stones and more hard rock. It is a good sound that I can use to play rhythm as long as the tone knob is not set to too much of a treble boost. Anyway, the first one I received was broken and Amazon promptly replaced it. Now the second one has broken and I've only had it a little more than 4 months. It has never left my house and I treat my pedals well. I have contacted the company because I kept the receipt and all, but they have not responded. I don't think these things are constructed all that well. There is some design flaw here. Basically, the pedal lets sound through but now it is very quiet and crackles and such.
Anyway, it is a great boost pedal if you can get one that works. As far as using it for an overdrive on a clean channel to play rock, I much prefer my Barber LTD and I've played an OCD and that impressed me. I have played 60s songs with it as the only source of overdrive (clean channel) and it sounds good, then I boosted it for leads with a Tube Screamer. Kind of nice. I like it best for boosting tube amps though.
I'm not getting another though unless they replace this one for free because it seems sort of like a disposable product to me. Maybe I'll spring for a real TS808 since it is supposedly based on that pedal. I'll write back if they honor the warranty- or tell you if they refuse to.

The ModTone MT-OD Dyno Drive is a split bypass boutique style overdrive pedal that provides classic warm overdrive without compromise or noise and is housed in a compact sealed corrosion resistant metal chassis that's built to last. When placed in front of a clean amp the MT-OD gives just a hint of overdrive making all your blues licks and chicken pickin\' riffs jump out. Put it in front of your main overdrive tone and you\'ve got a smooth lead tone that sustains for days! A simple 3 knob configuration begins with the \'Tone" control that goes from rich understated overdrive to aggressive sparkle with just a twist of the knob. Next up is the \'Drive" control that allows you to add just a touch of grit or go all the way up for some serious saturation without ever being brittle. Lastly the \'Level" option gives you access to the amount of gain you want added to your main signal. The MT-OD Dyno Drive, like the whole family of Mod Tone pedals, features period correct vintage style components, smooth linear taper pots, high impact switches built for the floor and top quality jacks for optimum tonal transfer.
