(More customer reviews)I'm a bit of an overdrive junkie; in my brief time as an electric guitarist, I've played easily five or six overdrive pedals extensively, and have tried out sundry others here and there. Overdrive is tricky; if the effect is too over-the-top, your natural tone and attack will be obliterated and replaced with a gross, muddy fog of lame distortion. If the effect's too mild, it sounds like a bad amp cranked up, if that.
The Maxon OD-808 is simply the best I've played.
The controls are simple: Overdrive, tone, balance. 'Nuff said. I was amazed by how much range I found within these, though! My favorite setting is Overdrive and Tone at around 12 noon, with Balance at about 2-3:00. Awesome...super creamy and responsive. I play with a Telecaster, and this thing makes it sound like a dream that shakes me walls (normally considered a nightmare).
I've never played an original tube screamer, but this thing is 99% the same pedal, down to the chipset inside (based on the research I did). Plus, at 100 bucks cheaper, why not go Maxon anyway? Seriously invest in one of these. Pricier than some other overdrives, but well worth the cost.

The quintessential overdrive pedal – often imitated but never matched. Identical to the original circuit and featuring the JRC4558 IC chip, the OD808 reissue offers the smooth, natural overdrive of a full-up tube amplifier in a compact pedal. Incredibly dynamic, the OD808 responds precisely to playing nuances and allows your instrument\'s natural tone to shine through.
